I have been using an Epson 1280 for a few years with very satisfactory results: color management, custom paper/printer profiles, etc. I really like this printer for my particular uses.
The desire for the new and different is rumbling however. Is there anyone out there who has experience with, or uses, both Epson ink and pigment based printers, that can describe what the practical differences/benefits are with the pigment based printers, apart from print longevity.

the ink in a 1280 is a dye based product….and dyes inherantly suffer from lack of density/saturation & absolute black density ("Dmax") on matte papers.

the inks in the 2200/2400 (Ultrachorme series) are the pigment based materials….with the Ultrachrome K3 being the ultimate ( so far) in color gamut and black density.

Longevity is ONE of many reasons. Dye vs Pigment has been a long disputed controversy and nobody knows more about it than Cone Editions Press (www.piezography.com).

I’ve tried numerous aftermarket pigments from Lyson to the "Quad" series in an effort of finding the Ultimate True Black & White /graeyscale prints for my fine art works. THAT to me is the MOST important reason to seek a pigment ink vs dyes.

Good luck………
