I try to save in different names, etc….but keep getting this message.

This has certainly come up before. Maybe you should do a search on the forum.

You might try saving it as a TIFF if using PS7, since TIFFs in PS7 support saving the layers. I don’t remember if TIFFs also save alpha channel information or not.

This just happened to me again. Two routes usually gets it saved. First, try making a duplicate of the image, then close the original without saving, then save the duplicate.

When it happened to me yesterday, I had to close all open images in order to save the duplicate (I had about 5 open at the time). So after closing these other totally unrelated images in PS, I was able to save my duplicate.

My first thought was "How do I make a duplicate image without saving the open image under a new name?"

My second thought after a bit of snooping around in Photoshop was "DUH! Once again I have found yet one more command that I’ve never before used!"

Image > Duplicate…it’s that simple for anyone elese who may not have noticed that command before.

In the past I’d typically have done this either with a rename & save operation, copy & paste into a new file, or drag layers into a new file. For any type of image, the Duplicate command is the fastest way to reach the objective.

There’s always something more to learn in PS….not that I’ve really even learned 25% of its capabilities yet.
