I have a photo I need to use in an ad. It is of a person and the way it was taked, as a closeup, the legs are cut off from just below the knww. This is fine excpet it has a very sharp edge and what I would like to do is blend the edge so the his leg ( the little below the knee) blends into the background, which is black as is in the picture.

I have tired the smudge tool, blur tool, tried placing a marquee around it and bluring the edge but I haven’t seen a nice transition from sharp to blurry, almost a fade out.

Is there an easy way to do this?

Any help appreciated.
Thanks

copy the image to a new layer, apply a gaussian blur, use the quick-mask and make a gradient selection from bottom of pic up to the wanted start of the blur, exit quick mask and copy the selection to a new layer. now make the fully blurry layer hidden and you’ll have a gradient blur
