Another method

Duplicate the original image, make your extraction.

Go back to the duplicate image select the clone tool, zoom into a very specific pixel that can be identified on both images (like an eye highlight), register that pixel with the clone tool, ensure the ‘aligned’ box is ticked.

Go back to your extraction image zoom into the same registered pixel and start painting back with the clone tool.

Art, like morality, consists in drawing the line somewhere.

K,

Good one!

Stacy,

When using the history brush, make sure your back and foreground colours are set to black and white. Hit D on the keyboard to set the colours to default (B&W)

Thanks for trying on this one. For future reference, turns out the links on the author’s pages for figures, movies and the like, go nowhere. Not much use as it turns out.

CB,

As with all things, old age sets in and the "links" have difficulty in connecting ;-(
I’m not a fan of the Extract tool anyway, did you read what the tutorial went on to say about the Extract tool?

"Comments

Using the Extract tool only mimics what you can accomplish using other masking tools. However, the interface allows some interesting advantages, mostly for making the creation of masks more simplified and a bit less painful. The Extract function is not a substitute for complex manual masking, but under the right conditions it can create effective, complicated masks quickly. You probably won’t want to use it when you have to make a simple selection or mask, and you also won’t want to use it for very complicated masking. Complicated masking sometimes requires playing one mask against another, and not only does the extract function not offer this advantage, but the result is an applied mask rather than the mask itself. Without the mask, the extraction may not always be useful."
