Without changing my preferences, two little boxes all of a sudden show up at the upper left corner of an image. What are these boxes?

Disabling View Extras can turn them off, but will also hide the Color Samplers that have been set. Is there a way to turn them off without hiding the Color Samplers? Is there a way to turn them off as default?

Thanks.

You’ve probably by accident toggled your Slice tool one time, and now it’s showing the Slices markers on the image. Go to view / show /slices to uncheck this and your problem should be solved.

BTW for fast toggling of extras on and off, use ctrl-h (or command-h for mac of course)

This is one of the more annoying additions to PS7 in my opinion. Unless I go to the menu and turn off slices, I now have to Ctrl-H
twice, where once used to be sufficient. If only I could make Slices turned OFF by default, instead of having to remember to set
that every time I start a new file… I’m sure it’s very useful to some people, but it would be much handier if that were tied to a
seperate keyboard shortcut, say, Alt-H for turning off slices, and Ctrl-H for hiding guides/marching ants, etc. Okay, probably some
more intuitive hotkeys could be made than that, but you get the idea…

That works. Thanks.

I use ctrl-h mainly for turning on/off a selection’s marching ants border. It apparently has other uses.

Well, by default your Slices guides should really be turned off. They only appear first when you click on the Slicing tool.

If with you it’s the case that the Slices guides are turned on by default, ie with every new document you define, something is wrong.

Indeed. Any clues as to what?

For the shortcut-key to toggling display of the Slices guides, see what you can accomplish with "View / Show / Show Extras Options…". If you unassign everything but Slices, you can use ctrl-h to toggle the Slices guides from then on. And you can still toggle your regular Guides with ctrl-; so not much problems there.

Yeah, but the main reason I use Ctrl-H is for marching ants.

But you are right. And they will probably upgrade the shortcut preferences to make them as advanced as those found in Illustrator.

I think that there should be a whole customize-shortcut feature in the next version. That way I could add more keyboard shortcuts
for features I use regularly. (Why is there no shortcut for Adjust Brightness/Contrast? I use that all the time… I use my own
multi-key shortcuts now, Alt-IAC in that case, but Macs don’t have that option…) Also, I could apply shortcuts to the filters I
use often, maybe one to increase/decrease brush size with a single key, etc.

For informational purposes, you can increase/decrease the bursh size with a single key, or more precisely, 2 keys. The "bracket" keys will increase or decrease brush size. Try it in all the tools and see what happens! The "bracket" keys on my keyboard are the 2 keys immediately to the right of the "P".
Mahalo for all your input!

Even so, it would definitely be nice to have more customizable control over this sort of thing. Plus, I’d like to be able to adjust
how much this affects brush size. For example, it skips right from 1 to 3 to 5 to 9, etc. Sometimes, I’d like to have a brush size
in between those, without having to actualy manually go up and change it. A key to toggle brush spacing would be nice, shortcuts
for layer modes, etc…

If we are talking about the same thing. When I select a brush tool (say size
1) and I hit the closing bracket, it will advance the brush size up to
2,3,4,5,6, etc until it reaches 10 and then it starts to double in size to 20, 30, etc. Isn’t this the way yours is working? So, it will adjust the size by 1 unit up to 10.

Nope. 1, 3, 5, 9, 13, 19, 35, 45, 55. And that’s where it stops. Using Photoshop 7. Is this some setting I’m missing?

My maximum brush size seems to be 2500. Also using PS7.01. Have you upgraded to 7.01? I don’t know if this would be of any help or not. I don’t know why you are getting what you are. Sorry.
Could you please describe exactly what you are doing again? Maybe something will give a clue.

I haven’t… Would this make a difference? You wouldn’t think that much would change between 7.00 and 7.01. It’s a free upgrade,
right? If I have to pay for just this little problem, it’s just not worth it…

Bracket keys. [ and ]. Can’t get much simpler than that…
