How do I adjust the spacing between characters in text? Entering a positive value (5) for kerning with the cursor positioned in the text has no effect. Same for the tracking with text selected. I am committing the changes. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks, Suzanne

Put the cursor between the letters you want to space, hold down Alt (command on the Mac?) and use the arrow keys (L & R) to adjust the spacing. Very handy.

Thanks, that does work but I’d like to set the spacing for the whole paragraph rather than doing it one letter at a time. Help says kerning and tracking do that, but I can’t make them work.

Suzanne

Why not just select the entire block of text and THEN make your adjustments?

Nice one Trace, that’ll come in handy.

That’s what I am doing! Or at least I think I am, but I must be doing something wrong. With the text tool selected and the cursor in the text, I right click and click "Select All". The text is now selected, and in the Character block I enter a value of 4 in the tracking box. Nothing happens – the text is still spaced as before. I’ve also tried selecting the text just by dragging across it – same result.

Well, for starters, "4" isn’t much of a change. You also have to make sure you’re confirming the change in the value if you’re typing it in (enter will work just fine for that). I’d suggest until you get a solid grip on how it works to try large values and scale back from there. 200, for example, would provide a noticable change which you can use to figure out what, if anything, you’re doing wrong.

You can also manipulate the entire text layer at once by simply selecting it in the layers box and then changing options as normal.

Thanks, that was it – turns out the value I needed was 90. I assumed the unit was the same as when using the ALT Arrow keys, and I was doing 4 of those to get the effect I wanted.
