Hi

I’m a noobie at this stuff so I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice or links to help me along

Below are links to a picture I took of the QEII on a pretty foggy day

One’s the original file & the other is my best attempt to date at "improving" the picture

http://www.timdenning.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/QEII/QEII%20Origi nal.html

http://www.timdenning.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/QEII/QEII%20B&amp ;W.html

As you can see I’m not quite at guru status yet 🙂

Any hints and tips would be much appreciated

TIA

Tim

You could improve the first picture as follows:

1. Use Levels
2. Set the grey point as the fog.
3. Set the black point at the ship’s hull
4. Set the white point on the pilot house.

Take a look at this

http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/4b6e2e1fad.jpg

Learn about levels.
I used levels to bring everything back to normal.
There was a lot of jpg compression so I ran it through a noise filter also. If the original has less compression then a hand full of mouse clicks is all that is needed.

Tim,

Try Image>Mode>LAB

Hit Ctrl+M to bring up the curves dialogue box.
If this box is only divided into 16 squares (25% boxes) Alt+click in the box to make 10% boxes.(100)
Now, with the Lightness channel selected, drag the bottom of the straight line to 50%, the image should darken and clear.
Then, click on a dark part of the sky just above the cranes and note where this point appears on the graph (around 40% on your example). Click on this point and drag it vertical to about 70% on the graph to lighten the sky.

Guys

Thank you for all your help

Mike – thanks for the insight into the curves dialogue box that’s some useful stuff

CAD is my forte and I’m finding that the learning curve with raster graphics is even bigger!!!

I’m just off to watch that video

Cheers

Tim
