On the format dropdown (where it says file) click the small arrow at the end of the box and select JPEG.
If you are not given the option to save as JPEG /JPG etc, it might be that your image is 16bit.
If so, on the toolbar go to IMAGE / MODE / 8bits/channel. you should then be able to save it as a .jpg etc.
Good luck

LfA,

When you go to save as and from the file type drop down box, you select jpg and then save it, it saves as "file"?
What does the file show up as in Windows Explorer? e.g." image.file" or does it not have an filetype extension, as in just "image"? What happens if you try to save the file in another format? Are you using Tweakui by any chance? This can cause problems in some PS installations, screwing up associations and such like.
