Whenever I open a picture file in Photoshop cs2, the picture and its colors appear a bit darker than thay actually are. If I make changes or adjustments to the picture while it’s in photoshop, I can’t really tell how the picture will actually look until I have saved it and looked at it outside of photshop.
Is there a way to prevent pictures from appearing darker in photoshop?

It is the other way around 😉
Either turn off the color management of Photoshop or convert to sRGB before saving (or use only color managed applications…).

Photoshop is a colour managed program, the ones that display images outside of this tend not to be.
To ensure that what you see on the screen (in Photoshop) is replecated in print, you need to calibrate.
Check out the following links,

* Calibrate your monitor (I use ColorVision’s Spyder2PRO for that).

* Close the shutters and use a "daylight" lamp so you’ve always the same light not matter what time of day it is and such.

* If possible install ICC profiles for the papers you prefer a./o. calibrate your printer (unfortunately hardware for that doesn’t come cheap).

* Don’t trust your eyes for PS can tell you whether a picture is just right or (too) light or (too) dark but you need to learn to interpret numerical values and this is for sure much easier for a computer than a human 8-/
