Anyone own a laptop here? Well if you do and have taken it through airport security, could you share your experience? Did the security gaurds want to dismantle it on the spot? Also does the xray machine or metal detectors harm the laptop at all?

Generally they let laptops bypass the x-ray machine. I suppose it depends on the airport, and whether the security guard checking
you had a bad day earlier, etc. I generally shave before I take any flight, because my beard makes me look middle-eastern. (I’ve
been stopped once for looking "suspicious". I shudder to think how I would’ve been treated if I actually were middle-eastern…)
At least they’re not quite as jittery as they were a year ago. (You don’t have to worry about bringing fingernail-clippers on board
anymore…) Oh, if it’s an international flight, you should probably report your laptop to customs, so they don’t charge you
tariffs when you come back. Just something I’d heard.

It’s my experience that you have to take your laptop out of its case and place it in one of those trays for small items like wallets and stuff. It *will* go through the X-ray machine. However, that shouldn’t do any harm.

Just let the security guards know that you have a Laptop in your baggage and they will check it over, a piece of advice make sure you leave the battery separate from the laptop whilst travelling. It may expand due to the pressures of flying, though I don’t know if this still applies to modern batteries. On the way back the security guard made me put it through the scanner with no ill effects.

X-Ray machines don’t damage general components. I took a base unit through and it was fine. Don’t know how it might affect a TFT screen though… though I doubt it would have any effect.

The X-Ray machine (the dive belt through the big black box) will NOT destroy any info on your hard drive, hurt the CPU or the memory chips. (Nor will it expose or harm your camera film or digital camera.
HOWEVER, it may be remotely possible for the metal detector to harm any of the above.
Moral: Put everything you’ve got on the X-Ray machine belt!

Having been through a number of airports with all the portable electronics I own since 9/11, I can tell you that –

a. The X-Ray machine won’t hurt your laptop.
b. They want you to take it out of the case, put it in a plastic tray and send the case through separate, so be organized and make it snappy because other people get cranky behind you if you aren’t.
c. Make sure the laptop (and all your electronics) are charged, they might want to check them.
d. 30% of the time they dust my laptop for residue.
e. The likelihood of you getting pulled for a "random" search increases the more electronics you carry. But do NOT check your laptop!

I know, I look wicked suspicious. Once, I was travelling with my children and friends ( 3 college-age young people) and my husband, the half-Lebanese guy, and who got pulled for the search and the laptop dusting? Yep, the mom. Well, you KNOW the mom always carries the bomb.

I fly w. mine fairly regularly. A few comments:

1) You will be asked to remove it from its case and put it on the belt. You may have to let it be dusted.

2) You won’t have to dismantle it.

3) X-rays will not hurt it. Metal detectors will.

4) I make it a practice not to put my laptop on the belt until I know that I’ll be able to walk through the metal detector to receive it. It’s way too easy for someone ahead of me to grab it.

5) I carry all power cords with me (AC and 12V). That way, if I do need to turn it on for someone I’m not running down my battery. Also, I’ll have a way to power it on the plane and/or charge it when I get to my destination and my luggage has been delayed.
