Hi,

I’ve got Photoshop CS2, but very much a novice. I’ve got a picture (of my new car) that I want to remove the black background from, here: <http://www.webhost-online.co.uk/temp/greymini.jpg>

Trouble is, a lot of the edges are crushed into the blacks, so I tried making a selection with a lighter body colour, here:

No matter what I try, I get jaggies!

Any suggestions?

The problem I see are the tires. Did you try missing with the contrast in try to get a clearer outline of the tires?

This was removed with one click of the Magic wand tool set to a 1% tolerance .. Click on the background to make the selection and hit delete. It’s a starting point. see

Go to the FILTERS menu – then select EXTRACT

You will be able to trace a line around the car to get what you want. The tires WILL be selected for removal with the background. You will have to put them back on when you are done – using the EDGE TOUCHUP TOOL. That tool allows you to add a bit more meat to your tires… it also allows you to remove too.

NOTE: Hold down ALT while adding the tired back.. if you dont hold ALT the touchup/cleanup tool will erase more.

Im using CS2.. What I did is.

1. Open pic
2. Select the FILTER menu then select EXTRACT
3. A new window will open up – now click on the upper right side SMART HIGHLITING.
4. Trace all around the object giving it a green outline (this is what you want to keep)
5. Select the FILL TOOL (upper left side of window) and click to fill the image with a ligth blue color.
6. Click PREVIEW – this will show you what your final result will be… In your case yuo need to add the tires so …
7. Select the CLEANUP TOOL – right side of window…
8. Hold down ALT while you airbrush the tires back into place
9. CELEBRATE!!!! You are now done!!!!

Let me know if it works for you!

K,

Not a fan of the extract tool, I ‘ve only used it once and found that the only images it sems to work on are the ones that can be isolated easier by other methods. By the time you have painted round the image, filled it and repaired the outline, you could have used one of the other selection tools or made a channel mask to separate the a background.

Thanks all for the replies.

In the end I used:

Shadow/Highlight
Magic Wand (didn’t know it existed)
History brush round the tyres
Soft edged eraser on the edges.

Not perfect, but fine for what I need.

Not quite, there are"independant" accounts (non biblical) that mention Jesus, see http://www.josephus-1.com/ for one.
Whether this person actually did all the things that the bible says he did is another matter.

Most scholars believe the Josephus reference is a later addition and not part of the original. The first independent references were about 200 CE from some Jews who believed that Jesus was historical. Alas, I have misplaced those references right now.

I’ve heard this story about ‘most scholars’ too, but it turns out not to be true. Apparently this *was* so, a century ago, but manuscript discoveries and a general move towards secularisation have caused most scholars to consider it genuine but corrupt. A study of the attitudes of scholars down the centuries was published by Alice Whealey in 2003, "Josephus and Jesus".

Of course substantial numbers consider the long reference interpolated even today, and similar numbers consider it all genuine. The arguments used are more or less flip sides of each other; the first lot point out that every line of it has been objected to by someone; the second lot point out that every line of it has been upheld by someone.

All the best,
