I’ve posted the original photo plus the heavily altered version here:

The goal of this manipulation was not to create a great image. Rather, it was to take a photo that I liked despite its many flaws, and experiment with manipulating it to turn the mediocre original into an acceptable image.

I’m a Photoshop newcomer (obviously), and figured I ought to stop reading about techniques and try some. The modifications here are pretty obvious – contrast correction, lots of smoothing of the sky, motion blur in the water, tiny fix to the tilt of the waterline.

If you had been starting with the ‘before’ image, what things would you have done to improve it (aside from chucking it in the trash 🙂

The greenish tint sortta left me cold.. and I suspect it is not a true representation of what you saw when you were inspired to take the photo. Sooo, I would warm it back up by getting some red back into the picture.. the motion blur was a little much for me, but that is a personal preference.. if you like it then it is perfect…. I also would add the reflections of the buildings.. A tighter crop and cutting out a lot of the water on the bottom would give you a nice, almost panoramic effect.. I tried to be true to your original print so I did not crop the image.. but a sample of what I am talking about is at

I fully agree about the green (assuming you mean the upper area of the sky). I’ll tinker with both more red/orange there, or perhaps even darken it to more closely match the original.

I deliberately went overboard with it. Experimenting, and all that. I didn’t think I’d like it, but the ‘silkiness’ of it really appeals to me for some reason.

Wow, you really put some time into an answer, don’t you? I really appreciate the effort!

Thank you, but I’m not yet convinced that I agree 🙂
I do keep trying, though.

Well, thank you. I just need to quit agonizing over old pictures in Photoshop, and get out to take some new ones!
