Edit text in a gif file?

I received a free website template, and the creator told me to "use Photoshop to edit the text" in the files (i.e., title banner). The files are gif images. I’ve tried to edit the text using Photoshop and ImageReady. I’ve gotten the impression that you cannot edit text in a gif file. I can see that layers do not appear to be present. I found a little blurb on a help site that said you can only edit text in a psd file.

So, can I edit the text in the gif file using Photoshop or ImageReady? If so how?

If not, how do I edit the text — do I have to convert the gif to another file format?

Many thanks.

He probably means use PS to change the image itself, since the text is part of the image, not the text separately. Like so:

You would only be able to edit the text in PS if the text was on its own editabe layer, with GIFs this is not the case.
It sounds like that the template provider is suggesting that you create your own header GIF for insertion into the template.
This is possible in PS.

OK, thanks. I’m confused because then what is the purpose of providing the template if the user cannot customize the file? The image I’ve tried to edit is a colorful banner with the words "Your Company Here" in the template version. It seems that if it’s being offered as a template for anyone’s use there would be some way to edit that image, not have to start from the beginning and create a new image with text. I know you can’t speak for the template provider, but as I’m new to this I thought you might have an idea. I have emailed the template provider but no response yet. Thanks again.

Pasdetrois,
The banner "Your Company Here" is not text, it is a graphic. You make your own banner in Photoshop, save it as a GIF, for the web and replace the one in the template with it. Have a look at the web page tutorials at this link. http://tinyurl.com/c2uns

OK I understand. Since I’m not a developer (as is obvious ha), I was searching for a do-it-yourself website template where you just enter your own text data into template files. And I assumed that’s what I had.

I will look through the tutorials, although the ones I’ve read previously required development experience and were not about using templates in the sense that I would like to do.

Meanwhile, one last question if you can stand it.Are you basically saying that I cannot use the template files I have, that they are placemarkers?

thanks again

pasdetrois,

Ignore the last post, the template is just that a placeholder or framework for whatever you want to put into it.
