Photoshop quits when I use the "Save As" function

What happens is
1. I scan an image
2. The scanning software closes
3. I have the image in Photoshop
4. I try to "Save As"
5. Photoshop closes.

I’ve checked using numerous spyware and anti virus program for problems and I can’t find any.

Done a SFC

Uninstlled / installed Photoshop – several times

The computer seems fine in all other respects

Photoshop 7 – Windows XP SP2

Anyone any ideas?

Thanks

Try re-installing the latest patch in the event one of the .dll’s became corrupt. I had a similar problem with bridge as it would start & then shut down … I re-installed the last patch & everything was fine again.

Alan ,

When the unexplained happens, it is usually due to a corrupt "prefs" file. Unfortunately, uninstalling/reinstalling PS does not resolve the problem. You need to delete this file, by holding down the control, alt and shift at the same time, THEN start PS with the keys still held down. You will be asked if you want to delete the prefs file to which you will click, yes. A new one will be created when PS starts.

I’ve just tried that and it didn’t work, I was so hopeful that was going to cure it. I’ve been playing with this for ages, I’d have been better formatting the machine again.

Looks like I’ll do that tomorrow usless I can find a solution.

Thanks though.

Alan,

Win some lose some..;(
Which bit didn’t work, the "three fingered salute" or no difference after the file was deleted?
You have also unistalled and reinstalled the scanner?
Does the problem only show itself when you "save as" a scan? If not, what happens when you open say, a PSD and do a "save as" to another format?
Has anything been installed since the before the problem showed itself?

This is actually a client’s machine. It’s a communal machine on their network that is only used for scanning and accessing a CD ROM database. They require to scan newspaper / magazine cuttings, send a low (ish) quality image by email to the client and keep a high quality image on the server. It’s not used for email or internet access or any other normal office activity.

What they do is scan the cuttings on this machine, save them into the clients folder – retun to their own machine and email the lower quaility to the client.

I’ve not removed / reinstalled the scanner but now you mention it I’ll take another scanner with me tomorrow and see if that makes a difference. My initial thought is that it will not as the scanning process is over and it closes itself OK. But I’ve nothing to loose giving it a try.

The problem does only seem to show itself after a scan. I can open a previous .jpg and save as a different name.

I’ve not tried as a psd file.

What happens is that you press the "Save As" option, the icons in the folder into which the document is to be saved opens and about two seconds later Photoshop closes.

This is a small office of seven people and a server running Windows Server 2000. I replaced all the machines, except the server, at Christmas and all was working fine until Monday morning.

I’ve Googled this and I can find people talking about a similar problem but using Mac’s and version 8. Of course this is Windows and version 7. These files are being saved on the server but I can’t see that being a problem as it all working fine until Friday. I’ll try saving them locally and see if that makes a difference. I can’t think that it will as I don’t even get the time to specify a file name never mind press the Save button.

I have a bit of spare time tomorrow and I’ll go along a try out some questions that you have raised.

Thanks for your interest and help

Forgot to say that it made no difference when I deleted the file.

Alan,

Are you trying to "save as" to a network location? Adobe do not recommend or support PS over a network (too many variables and things to go wrong)
Is PS on the same PC as the scanner and if so, is it possible to scan and "save as" locally on the host machine?

Hi Mike,

Are you trying to "save as" to a network location?

Yes

Adobe do not recommend or support PS over a network (too many variables and things to go wrong)
Is PS on the same PC as the scanner and if so, is it possible to scan and "save as" locally on the host machine?

yes and yes.

I wonder if it is that simple.

Save to local machine and then copy to client folder on server.

Hummm, I shall try that tomorrow. I wonder if sombody has changed a setting. I doubt they have done it deliberately but it might have been done by accident.

These are the kind of people who phone me to ask how to change the signature on their email.

Seriously!!!

Alan,

Heard it all and worse before, they sound like the dudes I support and they have had four years at uni! (something about you can’t put brains and common sense in the same head) 😉
I would try "save as" locally as you say and if this is possible without crashing, it looks like you have a problem with your network re PS, (not everyone does)
Hope you resolve it.

Interestingly when I set the "Save As" folder to be My Documnets on the local machine and then scanned it worked fine. I could then move the saved file to the server. Set the "Save As" folder to be on the server and it shut Photoshop as before

Well I’ve now managed to get Photoshop to save over the network. I can’t say that I fixed it or can I say I have any idea what the problem was.

The only Adobe products on the machine were Photoshop and Acrobat Reader. So I
1. Uninstalled both of them
2. Did a search for "adobe" folders that were left – deleted them
3. Using Registry First Aid I deleted every reference to Adobe in the
registry.
4. Removed more debris with Registry Mechanic and Registry Fix.
5. Reboot
6. Installed Photoshop

Now works perfectly, scans images and allows it to be saved over the network without requiring a save on the local machine. So I don’t really know what was wrong with it but I have resolved the problem which is all the client cares about. He’s not interested in the intellectual puzzle of what was wrong, only that his staff can use the scanner.

Thanks for your help

Sun spots? Storms in the asteroid belt? I’ve actually heard these used as reasons for application failure 😉

It could be something as simple as too much traffic on the network causing bandwidth problems when you were trying to save but as you say, you will never know.
Thanks for your help

You’re welcome, but you did the legwork.
