I have a Bitmap file on my computer that I created years ago. The text is in 3D and is beautiful. I’d like to recreate it – but don’t know what software created it. Is there a way to find out? If not, what programs are out there that can do this – with a drop shadow too? Thank……….

Serif software – DrawPlus and PagePlus will both do this as will Photoshop of course!!!

type your text and one way would be layer>Layer style>Drop shadow, or see http://tinyurl.com/lg4d4 for 3D text tutorials.

Further to Mike Hyndman’s reply – there are thousands of free Layer text styles that will give you a 3d effect – I suggest you try the About.com site first
http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/photoshopstyles/ig/styles/i ndex.htm and also Adobe exchange, the styles are usually smallish downloads and will simplify any text conversion you do! They are called .asl files by the way, If you are unsure what to do with the styles when you have downloaded them, come back here or email me! In fact, whilst checking out the About.com site I took the opportunity of downloading the latest metal text offering from John Woods!!

Thanks for the advice – I’ll probably look into it in the next few days (ill right now).

If you have Illustrator CS already, it will do this nicely with lots of options (a little too pricey just for this though!).

For an inexpensive solution which produces really great results, try Xara Xtreme or Xara 3D6. For 3D text work it is really very hard to beat 3D6 at anywhere within orders of magnitude of price, not to mention expended effort. For more flexibility and a greater range of output, get Xtreme. For a combo which works quite well together, get both. Check them out here http://www.xara.com/products/xara3d/
