I have CS2 suite but Photoshop has gone bad.

While I was working on a document it decided that it couldn’t read the type library and said reinstall the application.

So being the Suite I reinstalled the whole suite clean out the old and swept the disc with Registry Mechanic and Norton fix. Then I reinstalled the whole suite again. Applied the updates and was back to square one when the problem first occurred.

The rub is that even after reinstalling I have the same problem. The Type tool is not recognised the key command and I can’t type anything into Photoshop!

Most other functions in Photoshop work and the rest of the Suite work ok, it’s just this one.

Just what I needed after lunch on a Friday!

What’s going on guys?

Anyone had this problem and know how to fix it?

TIA Duncan
Delete ypur preferences file as per Help ( restart PS with the shift+alt+ctrl keys held down) then I’d dump Norton.

I have been using Photoshop since 5.x to now CS2 on a variety of PCs, both Intel and AMD, with a variety of chip sets. All computers have had at least 1gb of memory, multiple hard drives for swap and scratch files. In every frigging version of Photoshop occasionally, once in a blue moon, during extended sessions, the cursors and tools become unstable.Instead of seeing the outline of the tool as selected in preferences all I get is the "precise version" that will not change sizes on screen, although its effect corresponds to the size number in the readout.
Fortunately I can usually save the file with all changes intact. I have to completely shut down CS2 and bridge and start over. On occasion I have had to reboot the entire computer. Obviously this just happened again or I would not be posting this.
It only happens once in a while but it drives me crazy when it happens. It is not consistently related to any factor I can identify. For example I frequently multitask, even when working on very large image files, with several background programs running and rarely have this problem. Today I was not using anything but CS2 and it went bonkers.
I have to presume there is a bug in Photoshop programming that has never been corrected that presumably is a memory or resource allocation issue under some unusual circumstances. I guess Adobe cannot be held to a higher standard than Microsoft which has never corrected similar basic bugs in Word despite multiple so-called "new" versions.

Some problems are PC specific and cannot be recreated on another PC. See http://blogs.adobe.com/scottbyer/ in particular "Sad State of Hardware" and "A Good Day".

Duncan,

What do you mean about not recognising the key command? The KB shortcut "T" doesn’t open a text layer?
Or, when typing on a text layer nothing shows up?
How many fonts do you have? (a corrupt font should prevent PS from loading, but it is not unknown.) Try moving all non Windows fonts to a temp directory and see if problem persists.
What resolution are you working in?
What colour is the text set to?
Can you open the text and paragraph pallete,(second icon to the right of the cololur swatch) click on the right pointing arrow and then reset character. You are not on a network are you?
I’d still dump Norton. ;(

I can open a layer but when I try to type in any font or size/colour nothing happens.

Or, when typing on a text layer nothing shows up?

Yes precisely

How many fonts do you have? (a corrupt font should prevent PS from loading, but it is not unknown.) Try moving all non Windows fonts to a temp directory and see if problem persists.
What resolution are you working in?

System only

What colour is the text set to?

Any colour – it isn’t white either

Can you open the text and paragraph pallete,(second icon to the right of the cololur swatch) click on the right pointing arrow and then reset character.

yes I can do this and no it didn’t make any difference

You are not on a network are you?

No this is a stand alone machine.

I’d still dump Norton. ;(

Yep agreed, thought I’d give it a go as it was there.

If all else fails I will have to restore the partition to the point before this happened.

I have just seen a post elsewhere that highlights a conflict between CS2 and something called Spyware Doctor whereby Spyware Doctor, among other things, stops you from being able to type anything in Photoshop.

This is definitely what’s happening switching OFF Spyware Doctor restores the typing.

Excuse the reposting to this group but from emails I’ve received directly it’s worth doing.

Hi All,

I’ve recently discovered a serious conflict between CS2 and Spyware Doctor by PC Tools.

Within the last 2 or 3 days, one of the regular daily updates to Spyware Doctor has caused CS2 to have a couple of major problems.

1. You can’t enter any text into an image using the key board.
2. All short cuts have to be hit twice, I.E. to open the Levels
Dialog, you need to do this CTRL + L +L.
3. The program is much slower on startup and after a few minutes you get an error message about a missing library file, and CS2 closes down.

If you have already downloaded the latest updates for Spyware Doctor and have this problem, all you have to do to get CS2 working properly again is to exit Spyware Doctor. You should also go to the support site at PC Tools website and report the conflict. The more that do might speed up the fix.

If you have Spyware Doctor and don’t have this problem, I would be careful about downloading any more until something is resolved for this. If I find out that a fix has been made, I will post the fact here.

Unfortunately, I did not find out about how to get CS2 working again until after I had started re-formatting my desktop hard disks. At least I don’t have to do the same to my laptop.

What a weekend.

If you want to see how fast and trouble free PS can run on a moderately specced PC, get yourself a harddrive caddie (or two if your case is big enough) with a spare drawer. On an empty hard drive, install your OS of choice along with PS, nothing else except hardware such as scanners, cameras, etc. This drive will NOT be used to connect to the internet (do you need all the updates anyway?)so will not need any spyware, AV or other resource hogging/programme screwing utilities installed on it. Images created in PS can then be copied to an internal, fixed harddrive for use elsewhere/emailing/uploading.
The spare drawer contains another harddrive with your OS of choice along with all your other apps, utilities, etc., and functions as your PC does now.The PC will also have a couple of internal harddrives fitted as well acting as the scratch disk(s) when the PS harddrive is booted. I use two caddies, with two drawers in situ all the time. When I want to use PS I boot the one that contains it; anything else, the other drive is switched on at start up. You can have PS installed on this drive as well as both installations cannot be used simultaneously, you are not breaching the terms of the EULA, it is interesting to compare the difference between the two.
Once a month, I set the PS drive as a slave and sweep it with the other drive’s AV /spyware progs in case anything has get onto it from one of the fixed scratch discs and in four years of adopting this method, nothing has been detected.
It is also a good security measure as well, just remove the drive(s) and lock it somewhere safe if you ever have to go away. If your PC goes "walkabout" you don’t lose all your work (but then again, we all do backups…don’t we?)
My two penneth.

I’ve had PC Tools email back to say it is a known, new problem they are working on. Just keep updating updates is their advice until it’s fixed!!

So the only solution is that while working with any CS2 programme switch off SWD and do updates and scans when you have finished with CS2 programmes.

It’s part of SD’s anti keyboard logging protection. It sees text typed into PS as KB logging activity and disables it. Why it only singles out PS is a mystery
