I’m trying to understand how to make a picture go from a normal photo to a type of painting.

I once saw a picture in a magazine where they took a picture of a woman’s face and transformed it so it looks like a painting but didn’t lose the actual quality.

It was almost like they colored the other picture in 16 colors as opposed to millions, but kept the same quality.

Am I explaining this right?

Thanks

Peter,

It sounds like it was "posterized", go to Image>Adjustments>Posterize and play around with the number of levels.

The picture I’m "sort" of referring to is at this website:

I have NO connection at all and there are no pop-ups. I just like the picture of the house on the right side and believe this isn’t a normal photograph that was "fixed up".

The picture I saw in a magazine one time was unbelievable and I wished I read up on it.

This looks very very much like a 3D rendering rather than a retouched photo.

I couldn’t find a link that has shown me exactly what you mean but you might want to check out Corel’s Painter. I’ve worked with this program, along with Photoshop and Illustrator for over 10 years, and each has it’s own advantages. One very big advantage is Painter’s brush engine. It gives you a very real painterly look. Some of these brushes look like painting with heavy oil. It’s worth checking out. They have a free download for a full version of PainterIX for a thirty day trial.
