I’m using photoshop CS. I can successfully use the history brush on a part of the original after I’ve changed it with e.g. levels. However, if I’ve made that same change with a levels adjustment layer and then try to apply the history brush, I get the message "could not use the history brush because the history state does not contain a corresponding layer." Is there a way to use the history brush to apply to part of the original photo a change that I’ve made with an adjustment layer?

Thanks!

You need to make a "snapshot" of the current state. The best way to take the snapshop for what you’re trying to do is to press and hold the alt key and then click on the new snapshop icon (middle icon) in the history
palette. Then, when the dialog box pops up, select from current layer or from merged layers — either will be fine for your example. Now, you can select that snapshot as your source and your history brush should behave the way you expected.
