I cannot erase to transparent. If I use the background eraser it erases to a grey background. When I select file and new then select the transparent background it comes out as grey. Then when I try to erase it will only erase onto a grey background. What have I done? The layers palette shows it as grey, but the history palette shows it as transparent. Help. Thank You.

If you are only working on the background layer, this will not display transparency. You need to double click on the layer to rename it. (accept the default)

Mike. Thank you. Unfortunately that wasn’t the problem. Any other suggestions gratefully received.

Other causes:
Fore/background colours not set to black and white, hit D on keyboard. Using a graphics tablet with the stylus resting too close to the tablet surface, when not in use, sensing zero pressure.
A corrupt preference file, delete as per Help instruction

I’m back, unfortunately it wasn’t any of the problems that you suggested. Will you tell me more about "Corrupt Preference Files" I can’t find any thing about them in help. Perhaps my best plan will be to uninstall and reinstall. What do you think?

Hari.

Hari,
If you have a corrupt preference file, an unistall/reinstallaation will not correct this. You will merely be giving the corrupt prefs file a clean installation to influence.
To delete the file (don’t worry, a new one is created at start up)hold down the alt, ctrl and shift keys WHILST starting PS. (It’s a timing thing) You should then see a dialogue box asking if you want to delete this file, click yes.

Well done Mike. That’s fixed it. I didn’t hold out much hope, but you’re the man thanks.
