I have an Epson 1290 (Euro equiv of 1280) and printing using PS CS2 is normally good. However I occasionally get some blacks typically hair which print extremely orange whilst other blacks in the same image print black! this happens even if both cartidges are new.

This may happen, but I’m not certain, after I have used Image/adjustment/levels/ set white point.

The printed image at 1440dpi is very smooth and natural in most of the image but some like hair, lips and deep shadows are very red/orange.

I do not use Adobe gamma and have only one other gamma program running to adjust LUT.

Why might the be a shift to red in shadow areas?

I should have said that the screen image does not show this orange/red problem.

What is doing the color management, photoshop or the epson printer driver or both?

Waldo, Only Photoshop is doing colour management. All images have embedded Adobe RGB 1998 and are not converted. I’m wondering if on these problem prints it is something to do with me altering levels especially at the black end or if using the black point dropper incorrectly could cause it. At the area which is orange there is horizontal banding but no banding on either side, e.g. a head would have banded orange hair but the background on either side has no banding!

Not correct, the Epson driver can also do color management. If both Photoshop and the driver are applying color transformations, you get strange results.

Waldo,

When I said "Only Photoshop is doing colour management" I meant that it is turned off in the Epson driver.

Mike,

Thanks for the link which I had read last year. Its a good description of workflow and I have followed Ian Lyon’s recommendations. I still can’t figure out my problem. Why does it occur only in dark areas of the print, only in some prints but is repeatable when printing the same image again? Nozzle check pattern is perfect.

Sometimes I have made the mistake of adjusting levels twice. The histogram then looks like a comb. Perhaps I’ve done this lost black content then saved the image so losing it permanently? No doubt someone will say thats a crazy assumption but I’m scratching for ideas.

Beemer,
Have you tried printing the image from say, Windows Picture and Fax Viewer?
