can anyone tell me, simply put, if I can take an original say 5×7 image at 72 dpi (older digital camera) and achieve reasonable results in print after resizing to 300 dpi?

thx,
Jamie

I’d be interested in other’s responses, but here’s what I do. I go to resize image and note the width in pixels; then I change the dpi to 300, which immediately ups the width in pixels, but then I reenter the original width number. That seems to give me the required higher pixel width but it does reduce the dimensions in inches, so it does result in a smaller image.

At 72 ppi and 5×7 , the image is 504 x 360 pixels. That is it. That is all the pixels you have to work with, about 180,000 pixels in all . If you increase the ppi to 300 the image will be about 1.7" x 1.2". If you decide that you want to keep the image at 5×7 AND increase to 300 ppi you will have to invent nearly 3 million pixels to add to the 180 thousand that you had originally. This means that around 95 % of your image has been created from nothing by some mathematics within the software that you are using.

The final printed result will be variable depending on the sofware you use. Some software sellers claim it can be done with good results. My personal experience says that the results will be terrible.

The only way to tell is to do it and have a look for yourself. Only you can judge what looks good to you.

You can do it easily, but don’t use Photoshop. Use IrfanView (free download). Within it, the resize box has a drop_down that contains the "Lanczos" algorythm. this is an excellent resizer because with it you can make an image to 300 pixels per inch as well as the printing dimensions you want, and still look unpixelated and clean. It does an excellent job. 240 – 300 PPI is what you want for printing on an ink jet. The pro resizer is Genuine Fractals, which is a plugin for Photoshop, costs money.

OH whoops… wrong siggy there lol. How do I lear’n woodworking?

Lumber, hand saws, hand planes, chisels, mallets, plans, and the local adult ed. shop. That sig relates to rec.woodworking and alt.binaries.pictures.woodworking. Currently there is no summer session, so I am dabbling in graphics, reading the graphics NGs, and helping where I can.

Do you have another implication, by any chance? Other than that, you should click the link down there in my currently_proper sig.

I thought it might be a typo for "leer" , you know, stripping pine, rubbing down, buffing carcassing etc., (all mentally of course) 😉
