Preferences are Reset

Frequently, I start up Photoshop (CS2) and discover that my Preferences (not sure if all or just some) have evidently been reset. In particular, I have the compatibility dialog *not* be displayed when I save a file, but frequently I find the dialog popping up again. In addition, at least one of my third-party plug-ins (NeatImage) disappears from the Filters menu. What gives?
