Cannot open PSD file in Photoshop CS

I’m suddenly having no luck opening perfectly good Photoshop files in Photoshop CS. I continually get the message "Could not complete your request because the file could not be found" even though when I select the filename in the Open dialog box, I can see the preview of the file. Photoshop can find the file to show its preview, but can’t find it to open it. Even a file just produced in that session, if saved and then closed, cannot be open again. CS can open .jpgs with ease.

These same PSD files open easily in Paintshop Pro, complete with their layers.

I’m running Photoshop CS on a Dell Precision M60 workstation, with 2GB of memory and XP Pro.te

Before doing anything else, try deleting your prefs file as per the forum FAQs

Unfortunately, that didn’t do it. I checked out the Knowledgebase, and found the directions for deleting the Settings file (hold down Ctrl+Alt+Shift while CS boots), and it gave me a little box asking if I wanted to delete the preferences. I clicked yes, and I could see in CS that my Open Recent was empty, a sign that my preferences were gone. I tried Opening a PSD file, and got the same "…could not be found" message, while the preview still showed that it was there.

Thanks for the suggestion.

What is the file size of the file in the browser. A damaged file can only contain the preview, and not the real content.

I see your point, but I think it is the program, and not the files, as I just opened a 3.33mb PSD file in CS on my desktop computer, and it opened fine, layers and all (I am not having the problem at all on my desktop installation of CS). I then put the same flash drive in my Dell notebook, and tried to open the same file in CS there. It showed me the preview, but said the file was 1.44mb, and it gave me the same error message mentioned above. This is the same version of CS on both computers.

copy the file to the hard drive and try again… or you could just have a dodgy installation on the notebook… try reinstalling…
