Normal view

Not normal view, Normal mode; likely just semantics though.

The easiest thing to do is to first reset the tool. That will set it to its default behavior and eliminate the possibility of it being a tool setting. To reset the tool, select the Clone Tool, for example, and then look in the options bar at the top, on the left hand side.

You will see an Icon for the clone tool with a dropdown arrow. Click the dropdown arrow and the dropdown box will be displayed. In that menu, at the top right is a little black triangle. Click that and a flyout menu will show. There, you click Reset Tool.

See if that doesn’t solve the issue.

Hello again, Huuum, yes I did that, When I select the clone tool, I get a circle with a cross in it like a target, I press alt-and click and I an told that it can not use the tools as nothing has been selected. Followed by no text has been selected..strange ? Is there any possibility that the alt-click is being used in windows xp by some thing else? I have no idea what else just grasping at straws here. Many thanks for your help and kindness

yes I did that

So, you reset the tool as I described? Please verify, for sake of clarity.

, I press alt-and click and I an told that it can not use the tools as nothing has been selected.

So, you are saying that it will not sample?

Start with a clean image. Do this. Control-N to create a new document – give it a transparent background in that dialog box. Draw a rectangular marguee in the image. Fill that marquee with white. Use the clone tool, alt click in the white area, and then try to clone that onto the transparent area around the marquee (don’t forget to deselect first).

Does that work?

Je Kan, when you press alt+click, you must have a layer selected that has content where you are clicking. If you have a new layer selected, or an empty part of a partly tranparent layer, there’s no content to select. Pick a different layer as your cloning source.

If you try to clone a text layer, it would not work either.

Is the alt key working in other cases? (try some shortcuts)

"when I alt-click on the clone tool the icon changes "

You are supposed to ALT+click on the image is that what you do?

Could not use clone stamp because the area to be cloned has not been defined

That means that you are either on an adjustment layer (hint:look at the layers palette), or, you are sampling blank information (hint: look at the layers palette).

There’s nothing wrong, you just aren’t sampling data.

What you can do is take a screenshot using Print Scrn on your keyboard. Then Control N to create a new image and Control V to paste the clipboard into that new image. Then, save it as a JPG and post it to <http://www.imageshack.us> or Pixentral.com, and tell us the link to that image. Then we can have a looksee.

Make sure to include the layers palette in your screenshot.

Dear Michael, many thanks for your informed reply, I did as you said with the same result..nothing!. When I selected the object/layer and pressed alt-click an error message came up as follows
No text in the layer to select. I think the left click of my mouse is not working in adobe the right click is fine

Dear Pierre, thank you for you response.. strange thing language. I am pressing the alt button in my keyboard and pressing click on my key board and my mouse both do the same. I tried pressing alt button and the + button and click apart from trying to stretch across the keyboard the result is the same the target icon appears but no click selection is made..smile.

"I am pressing the alt button in my keyboard and pressing click on my key board and my mouse both do the same."

Yes, but the cursor of the mouse is over the image, on a layer, not a layer mask?

" I tried pressing alt button and the + button and click apart "

Sorry if I brought some confusion, you are supposed to hold the (left if you are using a foreign keyboard) ALT key, and while the key is down, click on a source point on your image, then depress the ALT key and the mouse button, and start cloning.

Is it the case on all images?

Did you try to reset the preferences as described in the FAQ?

If the left click was not working, you would not be able to launch Photoshop, or to use paint tools. I suspect a program that would remove the functionnality of the ALT key.

Did it ever work, or is it the first time you tried?

Now I’m confused. After defining the source point with Alt + left-click you should release the Alt key and start cloning with the left mouse button depressed.

God morning from Japan. I have carried out your instructions here is the link: < http://img141.imageshack.us/my.php?image=adobeproblem1vw6.jp g>

I have to admit I am confused. I will link another error that I am receiving when I do alt+click. It seems to be associated with inserting texT. All other tools/short cuts seem ok.
many thanks for your pateience. I must be doing some so simply stupid and find it so frustrating. I am using a wireless microsft keyboard and a wacom PTz -930 tablet and pen. With the wacom tablet the same thing are happening. so it may be just a user error. I have rea dthe manual..smile, watche dthe tutorials and tried to get this clone thing to do as it says ..

Many thanks Rev Je KAn

Uhm.. do you think it would be helpful if the images were large enough to actually inspect? Looks like you’re reducing them for some reason and it is impossible to read the error or see what’s going on.

And all you need to do at Image Shack is copy and paste the direct link to the image, like this:

Well the last one was PS Elements – not sure what you were trying to do there.

But for the first one, try temporarily removing the Wacom tablet and see if it goes away – as a test.

Ok, I was trying to see if the problems repeated in other adobe software using the clone tool and it is so I have my answer. I strongly suspect that I am doing some thing wrong. The third url shows that other short cuts work. But when I use alt-click it tries to place text into the picture .. smile

Wacom tablet?
MAke sure that you have only one tool on the tablet, or nearby! If you are using another mouse, make sure that no tool at all is on the tablet.

Wireless Keyboard? check batteries, and update drivers.
