I’m going crazy. Adobe Photoshop is not responding. I’ve got a Dell 8200, 1 mb ram, Office XP.I’ve moved my photos to an external hard drive so 75% of my 111 gig hard drive is available. I’d installed 2 greeting card software, the Wacom Intuas 3 tablet, some fonts and just defragmented before the installations. It started not responding. I uninstalled one software, the fonts, the other will not uninstall through the unistall/install programs, it just keeps telling me can’t install with previous version and I can’t uninstall that one. I’ve uninstalled Photoshop and reinstalled. I’ve changed around the scratch disks about between my C drive and 2 external hard drives. I’ve got the cache to 90% and played with that. When I try to do something, click on something, the hour glass turns and turns, if I click anywhere on the screen again, all the boxes, go white, the background goes white in the basic screen of Photoshop. Eventually it will complete the action. Turned the computer off and on many times. At one point, it would eventually do the action and be o.k. for about 15 minutes, then go back to not responding. Now it only responds for a couple of actions. Oddly enough Elements 2.0 works fine. Other than getting a new computer, HELP!!! I’m going crazy!!!

Shouldn’t be more than 55%.

I’ll change it when I get home, but it was working fine prior to all of this with the 90%.

When you set it above 55%, you are beginning to starve the rest of your operating system of needed memory. That may very well be what is happening – low ram may be causing your hourglass situation. Set that first, and if that doesn’t change the behavior, then let us know.

Hey,

I reset ram memory usage to 55%, cache is at 6. closed all other applications. It helped a bit, it is now back to the 10 – 15 minutes of doing o.k. then it will do the non-reponsive thing again, but it responds a bit faster than before, I only have to tap tap tap about 5 time before it will complete the action. It will go through this glitch for about 5 minutes, of the slowwwwww response with the hour glass and when I tap, again all the boxes go white. Then be o.k. for about 10- 15 minutes. I have 1 G ram, shouldn’t that be enough? I sure hope you can help me figure it out. I’ll take the time if I get the advice. Thanks.

I have 1 G ram, shouldn’t that be enough?

I dunno – Under photoshop 7, for very heavy automation, I never needed more than 512MB of ram. In fact, I ran under Win98 for a time with only 256.

Since CS2 though, I have experienced the same sluggishness. I was swearing at the computer because of the amount of time it would take to complete a task. In one action, running the Lens Blur filter sometimes took 30 seconds to run.

I read here that 1 MB of ram would be a minimum that one should run. I considered upgrading to 1MB and decided to upgrade to 2MB. It makes ALL the difference in the world. The program now operates as one would expect on a 3.2 GHz pentium 4.

Is that your problem? I don’t know. What you should do first, is go to the top of this forum and click on the Knowledge Base Link. There you will find a document discussing how to improve performance of photoshop. Read that over and try what you can there.

Also note that the more fragmented your hard drive, and the less space you have on it, the more sluggish Photoshop will become. You need ample space on the hard drive for PS to use its scratch disk.

Peace,
Tony

The problem is coming and going. Disk fragmented, disk error run, clean up disk run, new driver for graphics and tablet, plus as mentioned earlier changing ram space. I’ve got 71G free space since I moved my pictures out to an external. I’ve read through a support knowledgebase about errors or freezes, and will look for others. Sometimes it is less ‘bad’ than others. It is driving me crazy. Any more suggestions?

Dave, So I"ve turned off the font previews, how do I find out how many fonts are installed? Do fonts cause problems? Updated the video driver today. Regarding the 9.01 update. I downloaded it and unzipped it. Went to that file, read the read-me, started the install wizard, after a bit, an error message came up that said this version of windows wouldn’t support CS2, which I have XP Pro, and have been running it fine. When I clicked that closed, the installshield said it successfully installed update. Where can I check to see if infact the update was successful? So you know where in the system I can check? Thanks!

This is what is in "system" in photoshop. I don’t see anything about update 9.01

Turn off hyperthreating in BIOS if it is.

are you running windows service pack 2?

Pipkin: what is "hyperthreating in BIOS"? I’m not that computer savvy. Dave: no service pack 2. I’ve heard too much about, if it not being already installed on the Dell, it screwing up everything when installed after factory. Could that be why I can’t do the update?

Could that be why I can’t do the update?

that’d be my guess. there’ve been many MANY updates since sp2 and any bugs in it are fixed (well, lets say many bugs in it are fixed!<g>) it’s pretty stable now.

Hyper-Threading Technology <http://www.intel.com/technology/hyperthread/> provides thread-level parallelism on each processor, resulting in more efficient use of processor resources, higher processing throughput, and improved performance on today’s multithreaded software.
In my case (on office PC with Intel Pentium), Photoshop could not work properly with HT being ON. And another guys here have recommended to turn HT off too. If you do have AMD processor, then no problem.

Pipkin, so how do you turn HT off? I have PC with XP pro. Is it easy enough that I don’t screw something else up? Can you tell me or direct me to where I can see how?

Dave, I guess I’ll have to wait till I get a new computer that has SP2 installed already. Some updates install fine, as I do them from PS updater. Just not that one.

Go to BIOS when rebooting or starting machine.
And I don’t insist on, just to check if it would be better. But in my office machine after HT disableing Photoshop began running at full tilt rather than crawling like sluggish tortoise…

Dave, I guess I’ll have to wait till I get a new computer that has SP2 installed already.

why, just run windows update and it will ask if you want to install it. say yes.

and i wouldn’t turn HT off unless it was necessary. it makes your system run faster with many applications. and if it IS necessary, then somethings wrong with the hardware on your machine.

Well, it is doing o.k. these last few times I’ve used it, maybe it was the updateing the video card driver, or doing the disk clean up I did a yesterday. Still slow but no hoovering hour glass. Lets keep our fingers crossed, I’m tired of being so upset about it.
I won’t fool with the HT, I tend to screw things up and really don’t like getting too into the system.
I’ll wait on the sp2, I have the disk here. As I understand it, when it is installed on one of Dell’s computer after factory, it causes major havic with things and I was advised not to install it. But if it is installed on a Dell in factory prior to shipping, it works fine. I’m too afraid. thanks guys, hopefully all the tweeks have helped.

whoever told you that is a fool. there are to many security rollups in sp2 to count. and many more after it’s release that are only installable if you use sp2. if you use that machine on the web you need to install it before you system is compromised. it’s your personal information and data. it’s your security. do what you will. <forest>and that’s all i’m gonna say about that.</forest>
