I have just downloaded a free Trial Version of PhotoshopCS2, I chose the Tryout mode, but just after I started the application for the very first time, it showed me the window saying that my 30 days trial has already expired. What can be the reason of such behavior and what shall I do now?

Have you ever had the trial version installed on this computer before?

If you (or any other installed software) messed with the system clock, the trail would expire permanently.

After thorough checking of my installed software for system clock alterations, I decided to do full format of C: drive and reinstalling my Windows XP again. Then I unchecked my system tray clock option to automatically synchronize time with world server and then I have installed Photoshop CS@ as the very first application on my system. Having no others there, I started my Photoshop Tryout. To my surprise, it showed me the message that my trial has expired. So, there must be another reason for that behavior. Does anyone have any idea what it might be?

According to the Adobe engineers, a simple network clock sync SHOULD NOT cause a properly managed install of an Adobe application demo to expire prematurely.

Is this 100% true for all users on all manner of system configurations?

Unlikely.

But word is that a complete low-level format of a hard drive is the only way to be able to reinstall a demo app after it expires.

If you reformatted your hard drive, and reinstalled the demo, only to find it has immediately expired, then
* You didn’t reformat as thoroughly as you thought you did; OR * You’re doing something wrong during or immediately following the demo reinstall.

1. I removed the partition C: using my WinXP install CD, then I created it again and did full (not fast) format with the CD.
2. After I had the complete install of WinXP, I did nothing more but installing of the Photoshop CS 2. Given with the plain .exe file from the Adobe website, there is possibly nothing wrong I could do during the installation (actually no install options to choose).

That’s not good enough; you need to to a full low-level format, which writes 1s or 0s to every place on the entire physical disk drive. Then you need to partition and format.

1. I don’t think any means is provided with Windows to do a low-level format and AFAIK that’s the only thing which would write to the required sector.

2. Install a disk sector editor and ensure sector 32 is set to all zero – same as the sectors each side of it.

This is where Adobe plant part of their malfunctioning "protection" system and something that’s left there is confusing the trial version installation. It would be nice if simply uninstalling Photoshop took care of it properly but it seems not.

Windows dosn’t use this area and generally speaking, it’s open for anything to use. That doesn’t mean it’s a good idea for Adobe to go ahead and use it…
