On my Windows PC (XP SP2) with 1 GB of RAM, I have set Photoshop’s Memory Usage to the default value of 55 %. But … what does this mean exactly? Will Photoshop claim 55 % of 1 GB? Or 55 % of the free RAM at Photoshop start-up time? Or 55 % of free RAM at any given point in time? 55 % exactly or up to 55 % as needed?
What I’d like to know in particular: Does it make a difference whether I start Bridge first, then select and open an image which in turn will launch Photoshop … or whether I start Photoshop first and then launch Bridge from there?
Will Photoshop have access to more memory in the second case? My thinking goes like this: In the first case Bridge will claim some memory, and then Photoshop will use 55 % of what’s left. In the second case, Photoshop will take 55 % of the whole memory (minus whatever amount the OS has claimed), and Bridge has to squeeze into whatever is left. Is this correct? If not then please educate me! What’s the best strategy to launch Bridge and Photoshop when I what to run both at the same time?
