I have recently upgraded my motherboard and installed 4Gb worth of RAM (even though the system is only telling me it has 3.25Gb)but in the Photoshop memory preferences it is only telling me I have 1777Mb worth of available RAM (Which is what I had before when I had 2Gb in there). Is there something I need to do to make it recognise the full RAM?

Also, I noticed in the system info under the Photoshop help menu that it is only recognising 2048Mb worth of both built in and free memory.

Regards
Scott

32 bit applications can only recognize 2GB of RAM. If you have XP Professional you could try using the 3GB switch. Read up on this first on the Microsoft website, as it can throw a wobbler on some systems!

To maximize Photoshop’s use of memory, follow the advice in this Knowledge Base document:

<http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/332271.html>

And here : <http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/320005.html> for a fuller understanding of Photoshop’s memory management.

Hope this helps

Did you mean <http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/320005.html> ?

Edit: You spotted the omission!

Thanks Chris and John,

I have set the switch but it is having no effect at all. The photoshop memory is still only showing 1777Mb. Does this only work with CS2 or with CS as well? (I am running Photoshop CS)

Yes, succint I was.

Note that it was written in the linked document: "new capabilities with 64bits processors", then on the next sentence: "Photoshop CS2…"

Also, the title of the document is: "Memory allocation and usage (Photoshop CS2)".

See also: < http://photoshopnews.com/2005/04/04/photoshop-cs2-how-much-r am-fact/>

So, if you upgrade CS to CS2, and XP to XP Pro 64bits edition (see if you have drivers for all your devices) you’ll be able to use more than 3072MB…

Just to clarify:

The 3GB switch is in XP professional 32 bit.

I did think CS(1) could use the additional RAM too, but I may be wrong.

When it comes to XP64, then as far as I am aware, only CS2 can take advanage of the additional RAM. In this case it can access up to 4GB. The optimum on-board ram seems to be 6GB, as Photoshop will use any free RAM above the four it’s been allocated, as a cache for disk write operations, thereby speeding things up even more.

The documents I linked to explain this in more detail.

Thanks all… that’s why I was asking for clarification, because the article didn’t mention CS at all.

Looks like I’ll be upgrading.
