I’m running the CS2 Suite on Win XP Pro with Svc Pack 2. I recently noticed the machine was so bogged down that nothing else could move very much. Using task manager, I found Adobeupdater was the culprit. After waiting several minutes with no change, I killed it. System performance returned.

Since that time, I’ve not seen it running. I’m wondering what it is, and why it was acting as it did. Is there a fix for it?

It was checking for any updates that have been released. Presumeably it was having problems with your internet connection.

Do you have IE7 Beta on the machine?

Just curious – not being critical at all – but why would you want to be working with PS while connected to the internet? I can understand being connected in order to check for updates, but why be connected while actually working on images? Am I missing something obvious?

IMO, yes, you’re missing a lot. Some people do more than just edit images. I wouldn’t know what to be working on without email for starters.

Well, I have a broadband connection, and am connected to the internet 24/7, and have a number of internet applications running all the time (email client, newsreader for this forum, occasional music streaming, etc).

These don’t get in the way when I’m using Photoshop.

If you have a cable connection and open Adobe PDF reader then it will connect up at the drop of a hat – often without asking…
