When working in PS6 I’m getting a save error when trying to save a .psd I’m working on. This occurs when I use the save or save as function which causes an error that says ‘Cannot save file filename.psd because the file is already in use or was left open’. The only way to save the file is to use save as and rename the file. I’m on Win XP SP2. Has anyone had this problem? It has just cropped up out of the blue and happens quite often.

I’ve reinstalled photoshop but this has not helped. Ive also tried generating a new preferences file but this didn’t work either.

I’m starting think it’s some sort of registry problem but that’s a can of worms I’d rather avoid tinkering with without someone helping me.
Any help here would be great. Thanks

Versions earlier than 8 (CS) used the psicon.dll to generate PSD thumbnails to appear in Windows Explorer.

Your problem is the very reason Adobe pulled this in recent versions. It is due to a conflict associated with XP. Microsoft apparently won’t address the issue, so the only course of action is to locate and disable this DLL by renaming it to something like psicon.old.

To not do so could lead you to lose valuable images. The lack of thumbnails in Explorer can easily be addressed by save your files as TIFFs instead of PSDs.

The TIFF format is far more versatile and universally used than PSD anyway.

Andrew,

It’s an Windows Explorer bug that keeps a handle open on the file. Renaming psicon.dll to psicon.dll.old will ‘cure’ the problem, but you will lose PSD thumbnails in Windows Explorer
