I tried the following test:

* Opened an image in PS.
* Saved As image.jpg in a new folder, e:\test.
* Closed image. (At this point, Photoshop was keeping an open handle on e:\test, according to Process Explorer.)
* Opened Bridge. (Process explorer indicated immediately that Photoshop stopped keeping an open handle on e:\test; I didn’t check whether Bridge had one.)
* Went to the e:\test folder in Bridge. It processed the cache, which is distributed, so two hidden files were added to that folder.
* Closed Bridge.
* With Photoshop still open, and without any open handle on e:\test, I was able to delete the folder.

It strikes me that perhaps Photoshop is keeping a handle open on folders that it has changed and passes them to Bridge, if and when it is opened. Maybe Bridge either updates its cache on those folders in the background, at low priority, when nothing else is happening, or has the handle as a way of doing that with some future update/removed feature of a beta version.

This behavior may differ if a centralized cache is used. Who knows?

Okay. Here’s another easily replicated test – which might offer some clues to Chris, Scott, and co. as to the root of the problem.

Photoshop closed. Bridge open. Centralized Cache.

* In the folders pane, navigate to a folder, and rename it (I added an X to the folder name)

* Click the + to expand and reveal the sub folders. Rename the parent folder (another X). Rename successful.

* Expand one of the subfolders to reveal its subfolders. Then back to the parent folder to rename it. Access is Denied

These folders cannot be renamed or deleted until Bridge has been closed and reopened.

I’ll pop this into the Bridge forum too, in its own thread, in case it goes unnoticed by the engineers here.

Chris.
