Today I wanted to send a jpg to a newsgroup .. which involved combining 3 images. Sorry if the subject is political. I am not trying to promote any agenda here !!

I tried opened the 3 images in Photoshop and moved them around but couldn’t see how to save or export them as one image.

A friend of mine who is at level 3 on a photoshop scale of 1-10 (I’m at level 1) told me how he would do it and it was very complicated and time consuming.

I love Photoshop already (after only using it for a couple of weeks) but had to do the above download in another program and it took maybe two minutes.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks,\

Mike

P.S. I just saw that I can add an attachment but as I’m not sure who can view it I’ll leave the link at the top.

Do you just want to put the images side by side? No blending? Are they all the same resolution and pixel dimension? (Length Breadth?) If they are, the easiest way would be to make a new document the same height as one of the images but three times the width. (at the same resolution) Then, with your new, blank image open, open the other three images and drag them (background layers )into the new triple size doc. This will insert them on their own individual layers which you can move around with the….Move tool.

Wow Mike, you’ve got me again 🙂

Blending can come later methinks – walk before I can run, you said. At the moment I ‘just’ want to combine four jpgs of different dimensions (same resolution) onto one page. I will try the above even though the images are of different phyical sizes. I will play with the ones that I used in the attachment that I uploaded.

thanks

Mike

You could add all the widths of the various images together to give you your new image width and use the height of the tallest to set the height for your new image. If they are all the same aspect ratio, you could also enlarge the smaller ones to make them all the same size, using the Transform tool, or use the Crop tool to resize (OK if you don’t need all the image) Pick a nice background colour for your 3 times image, if you are leaving them at different sizes that is.

I have just spent a week doing a different tutorial every day and had great fun. Now I just realized that I don’t know how to do one of the most basic things of all and it relates to the above.

I had never until today used file/new … all of the tutorials that I worked with said ‘download this photo or use one of your own and do x,y,z and it worked. Although sometimes with a struggle and sometimes without getting as good a result as the author which is not surprising 🙂

I open Photoshop (8) file/new and then ‘open’ and a photo appears on the canvas. I click on the photo and it disappears behind the canvas.

What’s happening? How do I ‘add’ the photo to the canvas ?

Talk about running before I can walk !!

thanks

Mike

File New should bring up a dialogue box asking what name, size, colour, resolution, mode etc., you want the new image/file to be. You shouldn’t be following File New with File Open. (unless you want to combine them in some way.) File Open will also bring up a dialogue box from which you choose the file you want to open. You will end up with two files open in your workspace as you have discovered, one blank and one with an image Try dragging the background layer off your "photo" file and dropping it onto your new file "window"
So, File New just opens a blank canvas at a size, resolution and mode of your choice.
What’s happening? How do I ‘add’ the photo to the canvas ?

Why do you need to, it’s already open on its own "canvas"

Further to the above, File >New comes with a lot of "preset" canvas sizes which you can select when you use F>N, If the size you want isn’t listed, it will be classed as a custom when you type your dimensions in. There is also an option called Clipboard.(could be greyed out)
Try this, open an image file, make a selection with the marquee tool and copy (ctrl+c) the selection. Then ctrl+N (File>New) and you will see that the preset has already selected the clipboard option for you, it will be the exact size and resolution of the selection you copied to the……..clipboard earlier. OK this to open the new, clipboard sized canvas and the ctrl+v to paste into and fill the new canvas with your selection.

I’m experimenting with both of the above and they both work – clipboard isn’t grayed out.

Photoshop just does some things in a completely different way to other programs that I’ve worked with so it takes some getting one’s head around but I’m enjoying it and successfully used a combination of clone and heal followed up by some extra ‘clone” with a lower opacity today.

The Dalai Lama apparently said that we should all do at least one new thing every day so Photoshop has me doing that 🙂

thanks

Clipboard is only greyed out if you have not copied anything from within PS.

Cloning with lower opacity is great when you want the original underlying textures to show through.(skin for example), Try cloning onto an empty layer (tick sample all layers) and see what effect applying different blend modes have on your image. Also, cloning onto an empty layer makes it easy to get rid of your mistakes, just delete the layer.
I read once that learning to use PS is like learning a new language, the main thing is to enjoy the experience.
