I am using Windows XP with Elements 4. I made a picture b & W and only colored what I wanted. When I went to add it to my website it was HUGE. How do I get the picture less "dense"?? The picture is a great size but after layering it got too big. Can anyone help me on this please?

You would be better off asking on the Elements forum

In Photoshop I would use Image Size to resize to reasonable pixel dimensions and save with Save for Web. Probably something similar in Elemenstg.

since when do layers make a difference for files on a website?

jpeg… gif… png… all flat file formats right?

The width & height are the same, however, because there are added layers, the KB’s are huge!

What type of layered file can be put on a web page?

If you use Save For Web, you can control the file size and balance quality.

Just for the record though, John is saying "your conclusions that the layers are adding to the file size must be wrong, because there are no file types that are capable of displaying on the web that supports layers".

So whatever is causing "huge" file sizes, isn’t due to layers.

Quite right. So what is it?

Being too well brought up, I have never tried it, but if you place say a 300 ppi, 1600 x 1200 pixel JPG image in a web page and then downsize it to 400 x 300 pixel with HTML would it be bigger than if you instead used Photoshop both to set the ppi to 72 and to downsize it?

No, they would accomplish the same thing – to reduce or "set" the number of display pixles per unit measure.

That said, using Save for Web also gives one the opportunity to optimize file size, of course.

like john said, downsizing via html code downsizes only the appearence on screen – the file size to load via a browser is still the size of the original file. it’s necessary to decrease these file via an imaging application to get a smaller file size

Doh. I misread the point he was making. Yes, Peter, you’re right.
