Using magnetic lasso tool crashes PS

I’m using Photoshop CS2 on a PC and when making a selection with the magnetic lasso tool, the image I’m working on (and any other image I have open within PS, including PS itself) turns grey and blank. It’s very strange, it happens as I work and make that one click, then bang! The whole app turns a grey color and I have to start all over again and hope it doesn’t do it again! It’s almost like a low memory issue, but I have 1.5 GB installed though which should be enough.
When it happens I can see the actual tool itself in the grey background and I can move it around, but it doesn’t do any good since I don’t see the image itself. Sometimes the system clears itself and I’m able to continue after a few seconds, but sometimes not and I have to ALT-TAB to scroll my apps which usually clears it, but I lose my work.
I have the latest updates from Adobe installed. Anyone have any ideas what might be the cause??

My system:
WinXP
2.88 P4
1.5GB RAM

Jeb,

1.5 GB RAM is not a "matched" ammount, 2 or 3 chips in 4 slots? Either way, there will be a slight a performance hit, but even so it shouldn’t explain what you are experiencing. Has it just started or been doing it all the time? First thing I would try would be to delete the preferences file as per the Help file.
Restart PS with the ctrl+alt+shift key held down, if you get the timing right, you will get a dialogue box asking if you want to delete the file. Say yes.

I’m using CS and this behaviour has started happening in the last week or so; in fact, if I’m playing Winamp at the same time the PC freezes and I have to switch off and on again.

I’m going to try Mike’s advice – I’ll let you know how I get on.

Gummo,

CS(2) can be a bit of a bully, it doesn’t like sharing, does it freeze up on you when it’s running on its own?

Mike, I’m on CS – not CS2. My PC’s too slow for CS2.

Gummo,

I know, CS(2) is shorthand for CS and CS2 😉

One thing that you might want to try, while working on some of the good suggestions, so far, is to try a program called EndItAll (freeware) to remove all running processes, that are not necessary for the machine to run. Then, start PS and try your proceedure to see if there are any problems. If not, take a look at the processes that EndItAll has shut down. It is likely that one of these is either conflicting with PS, or is sapping resources that PS needs. Considering the power of your system, you should be able to run PS on medium sized files, without too much effort, though probably not much else. BTW, what size files (you said that you had two open) are you working with? What is your Scratch Disk setting and your HDD config? My guess is that you have added something, that is running in the background and causing the problem.

Sorry, Hunt; not any more. EndItAll was one of the formerly-free PCMag utilities written by Neil Rubenking. It is no longer free, although you may still be able to find a copy floating around the Web. I have a subscription ($17/year) to PCMag Utilities Library, so I’ve got the latest version, EndItAll2. The first version worked fine, too, but it might be a tad difficult to locate nowadays. See here

Hm-m, I just d-l’ed a copy (from Tucows?) Tuesday. I had it on the laptop, but it was tied up, so rather than wait, I just grabbed another copy. The ver. on the laptop is 1.0.0.3, but it was d-l’ed 9 mos. ago. About EndItAll states that it appeared in PCMag’s list of utilities in 1999, but that is all. I’ll have to check where I got the recent copy, but it seems that it was just a quick Google for "enditall" and my first hit was a d-l site. Maybe I have just gotten lucky, but considering how things go for me, I doubt that.
