I’m sorry if I am posting to the wrong group, or if my question is so basic as to cause intestinal distress among members, however, I have Photoshop 7.0 and Photoshop CS2, and I want to start out my "drawing career" by simply doing some basic drawings with the "pen tool." Can anyone direct me to a source of tutorials, books, DVD’s, etc. where I can learn easily how to draw simple shapes with the pen tool(and possible other tools as well)? Thank you.

The show was Learn to Draw" With Jon Gnagy, which first aired in 1946! I used to watch him in the early 50’s.

You really need Illustrator, not Photoshop.

I don’t think anyone needs to splash out on Illustrator to "draw simple shapes".

There are also a lot of simple custom shapes available as standard in Photoshop. You can load a lot more than the pre-installed ones via the Options Bar.

That tutorial is worth persevering with too!

Ron,

If you want to create digital drawings, Photoshop isn’t really the best tool. Illustrator is the application that you want.

The pen tool works very much the same in both applications, but in Photoshop, having created your path with the pen tool, you then need to stroke it for it to be of any ‘use’ – and that gives you a raster image which is no longer easily editable. (You can also convert Photoshop paths to selections, but then you don’t have a path anymore, but a selection, just as if you had created that selection with the lasso tool)

In Illustrator, a stroked path remains vector, and so can be altered easily.

As to Tutorials, a Google search on "Bezier drawing tutorial" will bring up about 245,000 references <g>

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions, URL’s and most of all, for the correct name and spelling of Mr. Gnagy! Now I’ve got several avenues to explore, so see you later!

My first exposure to drawing in charcoal/pastel was through a "Jon Gnagy Art Set", which BTW are STILL available. Gnagy lievd atone time very close to my area in New Hope, Pennsylvania and was one of the people instrumental in making the area an arts based economy, which survives to this day.

After he left TV he continued to lecture on his favorite subject until his death in 1981.
