Precise symptoms of your problem:
This has been a problem since the first install. I upgraded from Adobe Photoshop 5.5. I have performed all the actions to optimize performance of Photoshop (CS2 on Windows) Tech Doc 332271 and have had no improvement. (Problem 172007530, Case # 332271x) and (Case 3835932). My customer number is 104358842.

When CS2 is loaded, I click on File menu to load a picture. All parts of the screen containing selectable icons/menus will go white for a couple of seconds, then will return to the normal CS2 display. Not Responding is now appended to the program title on the screen and the taskbar. The ‘Not Responding’ annotation will then disappear from the CS2 screen but will remain on the taskbar. I have to repeat this 3 times to get the file menu. ‘File’ becomes inactive after the 2nd click and stays inactive for about 15 seconds.

I then have normal operation while browsing for the file I want to load. Once I select the file it will load, then sometimes disappears (CS2 comes to front and image goes to rear).

Any action I want to perform requires one or more clicks to select, then a minimum of 15 seconds for the action to occur. This includes page setup, printer setup, zoom, etc. Nothing works quickly. The selection areas always go white following a selection, but the selected function may not happen. Many times while waiting for a command to respond, the ‘Not Responding’ message will appear, then disappear when the command finally becomes active. Generally I can get one picture loaded make minor adjustments, and print the picture in 2 hours. CS2 should be better than that.

I also have Photoshop Elements, Photoshop Elements 2.0, Photoshop Elements 3.0, Photoshop 5.0 and Photoshop 5.5 loaded on the computer, along with several other photo editing programs.

Larry,

I edited your post to remove your serial number. Please be a bit more careful about that for your own good.

Did you try resetting the preferences? Details in the FAQs

I’ve experienced what you’re reporting, only not nearly as dramatic. In fact I see it happen with Acrobat too.

Once I upgraded to 2 megs of ram, photoshop doesn’t do it nearly as often, or as long, but Acrobat still does it (4.05).

That said, the only thing that comes to mind Larry, is testing to see if any on-demand scanning is going on and test performance with it off, if it is enabled (norton, on-demand virus scanners, McAfee suite, zone alarm suite, adn the like). Also, for giggles and grins, disconnect from your network, just to eliminate other potential issues, just as a test.

That’s my two cents…

Peace,
Tony

"Once I upgraded to 2 megs of ram".

Tony really, you must get 4! RAM is so cheap these days and your computer will absolutely scream (in agony).

Tony, Tech Doc 331412 was a great help. Two items from that Tech doc were useful 1) Change cache in preferences from the default six to some lower number. Two works best and reduces delay at start up. 2)The other useful hint was to check for bad fonts. This took several hours since I have more than 8000 fonts loaded from various programs. The hint was to move the fonts to another directory, then add them back one by one. Interestingly when the fonts were moved to another directory, only the first fourth moved then the transfer stopped. (Since machine fonts were also moved, and the process didn’t complete the machine text was all screwed up) Then by moving the fonts in groups and ingoring the machine fonts, several font problems such as font not found and font not available, etc. appeared. When these fonts were corrected and the good fonts returned to the fonts directory CS2 loaded and worked without delay.

Thanks for the pointer. I wish the Adobe Tech person had sent me here when I first called them.

I hope this experience will help others with their delay problems.

Sometimes, Photoshop doesn’t love HyperThreading being switched ON. You may try turn it OFF in BIOS to check this postulate.

For future reference, the system fonts are listed here:

With 8000 fonts,I would get a font manager.

This sounds like the old P4 Hyperthreading bug.
Try turning off HyperThreading in the BIOS.

Pipkin – it’s not that Photoshop doesn’t like Hyperthreading, but that certain older P4 chips have a bug in the Hyperthreading support that can only be patched by BIOS updates (the application can’t do anything about it).
