When I open a file from a network drive, do a minor edit and resave to the same location, PS hangs and has to shut down. I can’t seem to replicate the problem using a local drive.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as this is happening everytime. I have also noticed a problem that has been discussed elsewhere; files seem to disappear in the folder from which I am working.
I am running a fresh installation of XP Pro, with all the same configerations I have used in the previous install and I haven’t ever had these problems before.

Hardware details: HP workstation running dual 3.2ghz processors, 4gb of ram. XP Pro SP2+

thanks.

PS does not support opening/saving over networks. The advice is to fist copy files to your local drive and work from there.

I have tried opening and saving file from network using PS CS2, and it worked for me. I do not think PS does not support opening/saving over network.
You can check the file size on which this is happening to you, if it is very large, it may be network issue also. Try saving the file locally and then copy it to the network back manually. You can also check the acess priviledge on the folder you are working.

Adobe does not support it, just as Adobe doesn’t support running PS under XP64. By "support" they mean they won’t give you help if you call, and that there may be problems. It doesn’t mean that you absolutely can’t do it or that there will be problems. In fact, Adobe developer Chris Cox has said that there actually can be problems caused by opening and saving files over a network due to connectivity issues that Photoshop is not designed to address. You can use PS over a network at your own risk. If a problem develops, it won’t be considered a bug in PS, because you were using PS in an unsupported manner. In fact, PS has worked very well for me on the few occasions I have used it over a network, but they were minor projects and I wasn’t risking anything of importance.

Dan,
What kind of network are you running on and how reliable is it? I don’t have a problem on either my office’s GigE or my home 100 BaseT so long as they’re running properly. But as soon as traffic gets heavy or something goes wrong, the read/write speed can slow enough to cause a network time out or glitch… which falls over into most applications (not limited to PS, although PS is more sensitive because it expects a local drive’s response rate).
