Hi there everyone…i hope someone can help me here..im currently working on some designs that require different sized oblongs and squares
to fit next to each other in a jig saw type fashion..the finished article will fit together in an A4 sized design…within these oblongs and squares i need to drop in jpeg images…
my question is two fold…
1st.. which is the best program to construct the
pattern of connecting squares and oblongs?…taking in to consideration that i also need to drop in images later..is photoshop best for this type of thing..or a dtp program? or maybe something like illustrator?..help!
and 2nd..which would be the best way to ensure that the digital pictures i wish to insert into the squares and oblongs fit into the shapes i have created with minimal image stretching or unrealistic distortion.
many thanks in advance to anyone that can help me out
cheers
david

Sounds to me like a job for Illustrator.

I’d use InDesign. Use the Picture frame boxes and path options to create your "puzzle" like shapes. For example, place two boxes next the eachother. Draw a circle overlapping both boxes on their touching edge. Copy the circle to the clipboard. Now, subtract the circle from the right box to make a custom shape. Paste the same circle from the clipboard "in place" and ADD it to the left. You now have to custom shapes that fit perfectly into eachother. With these picture frames highlighted you can now "place" pictures inside, if you need to adjust the size or placement of the picture within the box use the direct "white" selection tool. Continue on in this manner until your document is filled as desired.

David, if you want to use PS, I would use layer masks for your design. Once you get the rectangles, squares, or whatever shape placed in a mask, you can select each area and paste your images into the selected areas. Once you get the images into the areas, they can be adjusted to fit using the free transform tool. As you can tell, I am not in design but I love the possibilities of layer masks in such a project.
