I am attempting to make a 16×20 collage for my firefighter husband who will be retiring. I have windows and Photoshop 7 and some basic knowledge of how to use. I will have it professional printed and set at 200dpi as the photo company has suggested. I am looking for info on what resolution to scan my photos in at. I hope to fill the background with one or two pictures and then use a few photos throughout. So I am not sure what resolution would be good for the photos that I enlarge.

Do you know of any books that would be good to get or any website to visit on designing of collages? I would like it not to look a scrapbook page but more like a piece of art to hang on the wall. So I am looking for design help, ie: layout, opacity, how many pictures to use so there is no overkill etc. I hope to use different techniques in my project.

Any help would be greatly appriecated. Thank you!

Scan photos at final resolution times the enlargement factor.

say you have a 4×6 you want to be 8×12 at 200ppi, scan at 400ppi then you are there.

I would scan the originals at 800 or so in case I wanted to crop smaller part/s and blow them up. Gives some room to move.

Then create a 16×20 canvass, import the pics and play.

Barry thank you very much for your response. If I scan in at the resolution of 800 then that should work with your formula, if I have a 4×6 and want to end up with a 16×20. I may be pulling some items of the internet too, maybe an American Flag, fire truck etc. Do you know if and how I would download those so that they would look good in my 16×20 final picture.

Also do you know of any websites or books that might have some ideas for me. I know that I will be "playing" but having some hints would be helpful.

Thanks again for your help.

You would need to download a hires image, which propably would not be available. Better to take a photo and scan it.

I did a firemans funeral tribute once. i took multiple truck shots, emblem, axe, flag, and anything i felt was pertinant to the firefighter. it should be simple to get good shots of those items to really personalize it.

Thank you all for your responses to my questions. I will work on getting those pictures.

Donald do you have a copy of your tribute online? I would be interested in seeing it if possible.

No i dont, and due to it being someones loved one,i would not post it anyway. i seem to recall i had the flag as the entire background, but faded out to be subdued, and then i blended the various photos with faded edges and some ovals etc etc. they had an old fire truck carry the man to the gravesite with a flag on the coffin and it was nice

Okay i found some bits i used and thought i could show you those. the one i made black and white with just the truck colored and the one image has some of the faded flag showing. i blurred the name to keep it anonomous. sorry i cant show the finished thing.

Hi Donald, thanks for the pictures. That’s a very interesting idea using the black and white with the colored truck. I like the flag in the background too. Good to know that just a portion of the flag looks good in the picture.

Crafty, i used the flag over the entire background and you are seeing only the portion behind that detail.as you saw,i threw some words in there as well to get a wider feeling than just images. good luck with your creation.

I am using photo layout in elements 5 working with 2 and 3 photo. I noticed that I can not set my image to 300ppi’s. It wants to stay at 220ppi. How can I change it from 220ppi to 300ppi?

Please help me to remember how to be able to click on my multiple layers, on the canvas (instead of having to go over to the list). I found this very useful.

I am not sure if this message is for me:

Where am I?
….
because I was pretty vague.

"I" am working in PS 7.0 on a multiple layer canvas. At one point I found a toggle where I could choose to click on the "picture" on the actual canvas rather than the Layers list. It simplified moving each layer alot, no need to name every single layer so you can find it again…just click on it.
Thank you in advance for any help,
Sandra

I was alluding to the fact that the thread was hijacked first by Ann Boma, who is using Elements and should be in the Elements forum, and then you came in with a question on selecting multiple layers which is also not really on topic (Making a Collage).

To answer your question: in later versions you could check "Auto Select Layers" in the Options Bar. I can’t remember if that is available in Version 7.

You can select multiple layers by holding Shift as you click.
