Not sure I understand, but… make a new transparent layer and merge it with the layer that has the effects on it?

I think you should try right-clicking on the (f) on the layer which has the effects and selecting "Create Layer".

This will put the drop shadow on its own layer, which can be modified/transformed any way you like.

thanks for answers! Ed’s advise – is what i mean.
but i have about a 40-60 layers!!! 🙂

is there any keyboard shortcut or any way to make an action for this? can’t believe developers of PS haven’t created such a usefull feature 😉

I don’t see why it’s useful. I would rarely do this. Do you need it to import into another program?

You could probably make an action to do it on a layer by layer basis, but for the whole document, probably not. Maybe a script?

it’s useful because i’d rather press 40 times one button, than make new layer, move it down, select both and merge them 🙂 think it’s as useful as "rasterize shape" or "rasterize text" 🙂

i’ll try an action, but i think that layer needs to be named properly first… and in the end we have to rename layers 40 times again 🙁

thanks anyway!

Facinating question…

Send me an e-mail (click my name above) and I will reply with an action I just wrote. (easier than trying to write out the instructions)

I believe it will do what you want and NOT require renaming of the target layer.

Unite,

But why is it useful to you to rasterize the effects? That’s what I was wondering. I have never found it useful to do so.

There are ways to do it with "Current Layer" rather than a named layer. In general, if you choolse you r layer by stepping up from the bottom or down from the top rather than clicking on the layer, then starting to record your action…

Further thoughts…

re:

Maybe a script?

Definitely true. Beyond my ability to script, however :), and perhaps overkill considering an action solution is possible.

You could probably make an action to do it on a layer by layer basis, but for the whole document, probably not.

You are correct that a general purpose action that would work on any image regardless of # of layers is not doable.

But one could build an action that calls the "process one layer at a time and when done move up/down to the next layer" action, say, 5 or 10 times. This would enablee one to knock off multiple layers in a single click. Ass-u-me-tion: All layers in a multiple layer block are candidate layers, that is, not adjustment layer or layers with layer masks that needed to be preserved.

2 Danny Raphael:
I need an action to proceed just with one layer, not the whole document. And I just don’t know how to select previous or next layer in actions. If I only could… 🙂

2 Ed Hannigan:
Personally I need to rasterize effects because I have to add one more effect atop. 🙂 But there are more reasons. For example: I need to know borders of the layer, but effects are not consider as pixels of this layer…

Yoiu can move up and down the Layers palette using the Bracket keys [ ] and Ctrl, Alt or Shift depending what you want to do. This is helpful in making actions but maybe not so much for what you are doing.

I think a script is your only hope. Maybe ask on the Photoshop Scripting forum.

I did it!
Special thanx to Ed!
Here’s my action.

Step by step.
1.Create new layer [it appears above current layer]
2.Move it down. Ctrl+,
3.Select it plus forward layer Shift+Alt+]
4.Merge Selected Ctrl+E

So, you see, guys, I definately CAN proceed with whole document without using a script :))) I just have to add last line in action. "Select previous layer – Alt+["

Okay. I was thinking more that you wanted to batch the action, not do it one document at a time.

By the way, you can create a new transparent layer below the current layer by holding down Ctrl and clicking the New Layer icon on te bottom of the palette. So no need to move the layer.
