I was wondering if you all could help me. I was recently working on a batch of pictures in my normal routine. I first open my NEF files with Nikon Capture. I make some base adjustments to the exposure, unsharp, etc.. then save as jpeg. I then open the jpeg in Photoshop for some processing with filters.

While working on a batch of photos the other night I found out there was a beta of Capture NX out, so I installed it. First let me say I am not positive that preempted my having problems. I am not sure exactly when it began.

Sometime during processing my pictures, Capture ( I later went back to 4.4 ) started saving images darker and more red than they appear inside of capture. I have tried saving them as Tiff, Jpeg and NEF with the same results on all. When I reopen them in Photoshop or Capture, they seem to be normal. Unfortunately, saving this image only saves it in the dark/red form.

Photos that I processed earlier that evening appear fine on my computer, so it doesn’t appear to be a color profile issue with my monitor. But anything I save is darker/reder than it is in either Photoshop or Capture. I have tried opening the NEF’s solely in Photoshop with same results. Is there some file that sets these paramaters during saving that is common to both programs? Maybe it became corrupted? I have tried uninstalling both products and reinstalling them one at a time but nothing has helped.

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

The link is a screenshot with the image open in Capture ( sorry ) and that very image opened in Windows/Fax viewer. I didn’t take another screenshot as Photoshop produces the identical result.

Thank you in advance.

Sincerely,
Dave

The most likely culprit for the symptoms you report is monitor calibration. Seen it a hundred times.

Spend 15 minutes at Ian Lyons’ site and you’ll be able to accurately calibrate your monitor and understand a bit about color management.

Most programs including Windows Viewer do not respect color profiles. So when color information is embedded in images, most programs ignore it. Photoshop is color managed and does take this information into account.

Calibrate your monitor.
