Reading Global Text Resources and freezing

Hi,

I am having this problem with PS in CS2 that it freezes when it is loading the Text Global Resources. This happened yesterday for the first time. I read the FAQ and followed the instructions and it fixed it. Today, I am having the same issue, however even after removing the New Doc sizes. psp in C: (again today) it still is freezing at that point. This makes no sense to me. I haven’t even opened a new document. I am working on a existing one. I know how to use PS and I have never run across an issue like this when I was using CS. I am still new to CS2.

I would appreciate any help you could give me.

I looked on the Web for other information about this problem. I ran across something said to hold down control/alt/shift while PS opens and see if that solves the problem. I tried that and I was able to open it. However, this still does not answer the question as to why this is happening. Any ideas?

That means your preference file got corrupted. The CTRL+ALT+SHIFT deletes the preference file.

Most usual cause is switching off the computer before closing down Photoshop.

I don’t understand how that could happen because I always shut down PS before turning off my computer. What I have wondered if there is some kind of strange interaction between Norton Ghost and PS. Perhaps this is why it is making a file that I don’t know about.

Does anyone have any problems using Norton Ghost and PS?

When I open PS and do the Ctrl+Alt+Shift, should I be deleting a file every time or just let it go?

Don’t quite follow you, DN9…

When you press CTRL+ALT+SHIFT on starting PS, it will delete your preference file and load with the factory defaults. That means you have to re-set all your preferences to, well, your preferences.

You should not have to do that on a regular basis – I can only remember having to do so once in the past 8 years or so, and that was because I was doing something that was thought to cause problems in Photoshop as a test.

There is a forum FAQ here on re-setting preferences.

If you find you are having to reset them on a regular basis, then something is preventing Photoshop from writing the file properly.

When you press C+A+S when starting, you will get a dialog that asks if you want to delete your preferences. Tell it yes.

Thanks everyone for the input. I don’t know if my problem was being caused by a very large file or not. The preferences are cleared and I am not having trouble with this issue now.

I am one of the small but significant number of users who have suffered this ‘feature’ (using Microsoft-speak) from time to time for years. I have tried the deletion of the New Doc Sizes file, with occasional success. I have reinstalled Photoshop, with occasional success. I have tried deleting Prefs, with occasional success.

After a long period of successful loading (after all, one should expect that a computer program should at least load before any problems arise), I have this week suffered another bout of this ‘feature’.

What, if anything, is Adobe doing about this? Things are crook when a program (and an expensive one at that) won’t load when requested.

Fortunately, if I am in a hurry to do something, I still have PS7 installed and can use it if no newer facilities are needed for the job.

However, I have found that one solution, if things are not pressing, is to leave Photoshop to stew for a couple of hours and then try again. Strangely, this usually works. But a user shouldn’t have to postpone doing something, simply because the program won’t load when required.

Now, while a range of ‘solutions’ are being employed by understanding and tolerant users, I think that it is about time for Adobe to hit this one on the head, once and for all.

Has anyone raised it with the company and got a response?

I just don’t accept that a program should behave like this for a significant number of users, who are clearly not at fault. If they were, then surely other CS programs would also have the same problem. They don’t (at least for me), and no other program on my PC freezes on loading. In fact, I can’t recall any other program I have ever used refusing to load, except on the rare occasion when a file has become corrupted and reinstallation has been needed.
