I want to use a style from Photoshop WOW 6 to show my high school class how styles work. The style is for a wood carving (page 387 if you have the book. A black-and-white graphic is placed above a wood textured background). Rather than just have the kids apply the finished style, I want them to set it up, layer style by layer style.

But, I can’t get it to work. Everything comes out fine except the part of the wood that should be recessed, which for me comes out totally black. On the WOW example, the graphic layer has a fill of 15%, and that is what removes the black, since when I move the slider to 100%, the recessed areas go black.

But when I change the fill to 15% on my step-by-step file, nothing happens. I’ve checked each layer style setting, opacity, modes, etc., and see nothing else that is set differently than the WOW example. Why isn’t the Fill setting working for me?
