I have been given a brand new, licensed copy of the subject software to go with my new digital camera. Unfortunately, I have been given the UPGRADE, and I do not have a Photoshop version of any description installed on my PC. I have tried to find someone with an old licensed standalone version for sale, which I can purchase and then use the UPGRADE which was very expensive $148.00; and as I have opened the box the store will not take back the upgrade – but they don’t have the any standalone copies. Any ideas or suggestions would be very much appreciated. I live in Bedford, England.

I suggest you call Adobe, they have a 30 day return policy and would most likely take it back or let you trade it in on a full copy of Photoshop. If you think $148 was expensive then you won’t be able to afford buying a full copy of Photoshop, last time I looked it was about $650…by the way its worth every penny! I find it sort of strange that you say the store doesn’t have any copies of the full version of Photoshop, and by the way what Digital Camera gives you a Upgrade for Photoshop? I’ve seen them package Photoshop Elements, but I’ve never seen them package an Upgrade for the full version? I got a very good deal years ago, I bought a Microteck Scanner and they included a full version of Photoshop 4 with the Scanner, the Scanner was overpriced but Photoshop made up for that and then some…I’ve kept it upgraded with every upgrade and have enjoyed to the fullest Photoshop. I don’t know what you guys do in Bedford, England but in the good old USA a $148 is not a lot of money. Good Luck, and do like I said and call Adobe, their very understanding!

From our side of the pond
Today’s currency exchange rate (Tuesday)
£1= 1.8875$

The catalogue in front of me listing among other products Photoshop CS2 Single copy Mac or Win
£492 that equates to 929$ roughly

Upgrade sells at £135 (this seems a standard price over the last couple of upgrades ; anyway that equates to 255$ roughly)

Single copy InDesign CS2 £629 I leave you to do the maths

The above prices INCLUDE our vat ; we don’t have separate local sales tax
and one has to include postage and vat on top of that IF shipped to you. As you may see we are RIPPED off big time If one compares like for like prices for exactly the same product between UK and States- nothing new there then.

Good Afternoon Charles

Thanks for the very detailed and helpful response. Sorry I mislead you, the upgrade was a present from a relative to help me convert over from 35mm film. I’ve only had the camera a couple of months. The store is just a small military exchange. Everyone said the CS2 was brilliant, and based on your input, it must be.

Now, dare I shoot next year’s photo budget and if Adobe says they will take it back and give me a credit on a full copy.

Best Regards

James. You can sometimes find someone who has a licensed "previous version" for sale. Making such a purchase, however, is not without risk. If you do come across such a vendor, make sure they have obtained and a "transfer of license" form from Adobe which will enable you to register it in your name.

As for "shooting your budget" on the full CS2. I can only echo Charles’ sentiments about about it being worth every penny.

Best of luck.

Chris.
