Though I am not an expert on Photoshop, I know my way around it, and, after much deliberation, I have decided to purchase a Photoshop program. Now the question is whether I want 6.0 or 7.0. I would like to hear opinions by people who have used both. Which is better?

I will eventually want to use the program to help me build a website, though I am after more than just that in the program.

What is different about 7.0?

Thanks!
Laura

The newest version of Photoshop is Photoshop CS. Do they even sell version 6 and 7 any more? The newest version have what version 6 and 7 have but even more.

If you have to ask, then you probably don’t need photoshop. Look into Elements. (And where they heck can you _buy_ Version 6 or 7?)

Just a guess but I think you’ll be happy with either one. Do avoid 5.5 and earlier, since the color setup is trickier in those versions.

You can always find unopened and unregistered copies of nearly any version of Photoshop on Ebay.

By definition 7 must be better than 6 or a) they wouldn’t have released it and b) nobody would have bought it!!

Thank you for that. It was quite ignorant of me not to think of amazon.com.

I forgot to mention. The reason I am asking is because my sister, who majored in multimedia design (I think that’s the proper name for it), told me to save my money and purchase 6.0, but if I’m going to spend my money, I want to spend it on the most up-to-date version. She suggested I find a group on google and ask more people for suggestions. It’s not that I don’t trust my sister, but this is a lot of money for me to spend, and I want to get it right.

I already looked into Elements as well. That is definitely not what I want.

Thanks!

Okay. I use V6 (Mac OS9) at home, V7 on my work desktop (PC XPPro) and CS in the editing lab (Mac G5 OSX). CS is best all around and in particular it is good in our visual lab because they do largely digital video and digital still work there. CS has other nice features, but (a big IMHO here) if money is a big issue, and you can save hundreds of $ buying Version 7, then Version 7 is good, too. I’d not bother with Version 6.

After you posted the idea that one can buy PS on EBay, I checked and it is clear there are some questionable ‘deals’ there. It might be a good idea to learn exactly what they are selling. For example, "stil in the shrink wrap" means absolutely nothing. Beware of counterfeits, corporate editions, ‘upgrade’ only editions, backup copies and more.

I’m sorry. I don’t normally post, and I really don’t like to move too far from the topic, but the two reasons just given concerning Photoshop 6 or 7 are so absurd I just had to stick my two cents in. It isn’t difficult to realize that the reason they would release a new version is to make more money, to sell more software. It doesn’t have to have anything to do with whether it is bettter or not. And to even remotely believe that just because we buy something, it has to be good or better is …. I just don’t know the right word. We are so taken up with "digital envy" that a new version number is all we need to justify a purchase. Whether it is "better" or not has nothing to do with it.
I think we need better reasons to compare 6 and 7.
I use 6 at home and 7 at work. They are both great. They have perhaps different purposes. I understand CS offers a lot more for photographers and video and web folks. But "better"? No way. Just different.
Just look around at the many people doing great work on earlier versions of Photoshop. It’s just a tool. The key is the person doing the work. And whether they are "better" or not doesn’t have anything to do with the number after their name, the fact their parents "released" them or the fact other people like them. Howard

I agree with the most recent comments below. The person using the program, and their creative genius that comes out in whatever they make, is what will determine how great the end product will be.

Having said that, the ‘ease of use’ of whichever you decide to use has a lot to do with it. If a program is just hard to get used to, or doesn’t have a great GUI, or the simplest of tasks are hindered by a poorly designed program, then it’s most likely going to be an excercise in frustration more than anything.

I like PS7 over PS6 only because they’ve made it a lot EASIER to do some of the things that are commonly done. When something used to take 3 or 4 clicks into a menu and then a pop-up screen, now only takes 1 click or a keystroke. And with the customizable Actions you can create, it’s easier than ever to do the mundane yet repetetive tasks. But I wouldn’t be able to do any of that if I hadn’t gotten used to the basics with earlier versions.

The other thing to consider is the tutorials that are out there. I learned everything I know from tutorials that others had posted, and there are some great ones out there! Most of those will continue to be updated and written for the latest versions of the software. If you do a search for "Photoshop Tutorials" you’ll get tons of hits, and most will be for ver.7. Not to say that the older tutorials will disappear, there’ll just be fewer of them as time goes on.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with 6, but 7 is just much EASIER!

That’s my 3.5 cents!
