Hey guys,

I’ve started a new site, which is basically a tutorial index and search engine for photoshop and other graphic apps. There’s also free image hosting for sig files and such, and I’m starting a 3d model and Photoshop filter area etc… Anyhow, just though you guys might like to check it out, and if you have a site with tutorials, feel free to submit them. Addy is www.pixel2life.com

Thanks,
Dan

Very pretty, and damn good interface, but there are hundreds if not thousands of Photoshop sites out there already that have the same links to the same tutorials, same galleries and such. If your only PS elements are from http://www.spyroteknik.com, then maybe people should go there instead…

What we need in this NG is people answering questions and solving problems, not a promotion of sites or interests and venues.

Hi Fred,

Thanks for the feedback.. the reason why you see the spro stuff is because that’s the latest submission and by default, the listing shows latest to oldest. The general plan is to feature simply a huge database of tutorials… most of the sites I’ve seen have maybe 1500 tutorials… I’m thinking more along the lines of 15000 or more per category (Not just Photoshop). Plus we’ll have the same type of search and rating system for filters, 3d models and more as we progress… (I see headaches in my future).

Anyhow, I didn’t mean to offend anyone by posting this in here… just thought maybe some of the folks here could benefit from the site, so hopefully I didn’t piss too many people off with my site plug 🙁

Thanks Freddie 🙂
Dan

PS. I think you did better than 2 cents 😉

Great site, Dan! A searchable database of tutorial sites is a wonderful idea. Layout’s good and navigation is easy.

I like that adding tutorials is free, requires no registration (aside from demonstrating that the site is yours) and that tutorials open in a new window, not framed as part of your site.

A class act all the way around.

Hi Stuart,

Several other Adobe products, including Illustrator will be added. I’ll be adding some new categories tonight, so if I don’t get Illustrator up tonight, it’ll be in the next couple of days. Atm, I’m working on getting some content for Swift3D.

Thanks,

Thanks for the feedback Tom 🙂 And you’ve mentioned pretty much what was planned all along. Most webmasters and have enough places that require a login of some kind as it is, didn’t want to add another one. I wanted to make it as easy as possible for anyone to submit their content. And I really want it to be clear that we’re just a search site and the content is NOT from us. I think anyone that offers a similar service and uses frames (I’ve seen ppl do it) to make the content look like part of their site is a joke.

Thanks again for the kind words and submitting your site 🙂

Agreed… it’s quite a bit of energy, but once the entire backend is complete, it’s not too bad. The rating and paging system was really the big pain, but now it’s pretty laid back. Perhaps if/when sumbmissions are consistent it may tie me up, but I certainly won’t mind. This site is my hobby more than anything else… I created it and work on it just to have something to do to relax and get away from daily issues. Some people drink, I build websites 😉

Actually right now I’m cracking my head trying to figure out how I want to do the 3D model and filter sections. I don’t want to link to the model files themselves, just the site page where they can download it from. I’m thinking each category will have a list of available models so a user can look up "Dog" for example and when they click on relevant hits, the user is brought to the site page with a link to the download itself. I don’t think webmasters would want me to use links directly to the model.. the whole point is to get some traffic to their sites, not for me to link their content.

Anyhow… not for you guys to care or hear about 😉 I tend to rant…

Thanks again for checking out the site!

Just what we need. Another Tutorial site.

Actually, this is just what I needed. I have spent the last 2 hours looking at tutorials on your site. Another wasted Friday nite, but think of the money I saved. I can go and buy another filter for my camera(yes, Real Glass, not Digital trickery).
The Photography tutorials on your site, by Robert D Feinman, are on par with the best photography tutorials on the web. As you can probably tell, I am more interested in the digital image manipulation tutorials than the "How to create a Shiny button" tutorials. That brings me to a suggestion for browser control. It would be nice if you could sub-catagorize the tutorials, either by subject, or by tutorial originator. I personally use sub-catagories within Photoshop such as, Color Correction–Sharpening–Selections–Masking techniques… etc, to allow me to find my subject of interest within my own database. It makes finding a particular subject tutorial much more productive. Wading thru the 25 pages of Photoshop tutorials on your site is a challange(I only made it thru the first 15), and it will only get worse as you add more content.
Maybe this is a great and nobel idea to further mankinds knowledge base or maybe it’s just a chance for you to sell some e-products, but I have your site bookmarked in my Favorites folder.

Hi Nikki 🙂

Thanks for your comments 🙂 I was thinking of adding sub sections to the categories, but the problem is that as a Corel user myself, I may not know what tutorials fall under which category. I could probably get away with the Photoshop ones, but most of the others I wouldn’t know what goes where. Perhaps if I can get some of my friends to help out, that may be something I do in the future.

You mentioned this:

"It would be nice if you
could sub-catagorize the tutorials, either by subject, or by tutorial originator."

Sorting by source name (tutorial originator) is currently one of the sort options 🙂 I may add an option to "show only" or something.

Once I get the other sections done (Filters and 3D models) I’ll probably go back to the tutorial section (The primary focus) and add some new functions. I have tons of ideas for the site, but as I do work fulltime and have a 10 month old baby, I can only do what time allows me 🙂

Haha… no there is no plans to sell anything. Perhaps in the future there will be additional services I offer that are not free (Tutorials etc will ALWAYS be free), but I haven’t really thought about it and I’m not even close to worrying about it. I have a sig and logo request section in the forum and I do them for free. The small donations I get from people that I do work for pays some of the hosting, and I don’t mind paying the rest. As long as that stays reasonable, I have no need to make more money. Like I said, it’s a hobby 🙂

Anyhow, thanks for making my saite a fave and feel free to send me more suggestions!
