Removing date imprint

I was given some digital files from a Sony Mavica. Sadly, the date imprint is on each image in bright red. The patch tool works well if the number is superimposed on a solid tone, but when it is over an area with lots of detail, I haven’t been successful. Is there a good way to remove the numbers when they are over a detailed area of the image? Any help would be appreciated.
