I am working on a site for a funky shoe store and I want to make the navigational elements look lke they were stepped on as a roll over effect.

Kind of like if the text were on sand or a soft substrate and you stepped on it in your bare foot.

Obviously I can emboss the foot shape or the text, but how would I distort part of the text so it follows the contour of the shape the foot made.

There are many more on the web if you search for "displacement filter".

And some are so close as to be within rattlesnake striking distance: Phosphor.Digital, "If you want to learn the Displace Filter" #1, 10 Oct 2004 8:16 am </cgi-bin/webx?14/0>

Not sure about the other two methods, but can’t you just flatten the text and then apply the emboss filter. It might be easier than using the more powerful displacement filter.
