Can someone please tell me where to look for detailed instructions regarding moving PSE 4, along with all of its databases and photos, to a new computer?

Thank you very much,
David

Thank you very much,
David,

Not familar with Elements but it would need to be reinstalled on the new PC. What do you mean by databases? If it’s all the image numbnails, these should be recreated when you open PSE4 on the new PC.
The images are separate to PSE4 and could be copied onto CD/DvD from their respective folders or transferred between the two PC’s using a crossover network cable.
If you are on XP PC’s see

I think by "database" that he’s talking about that crap "Organizer" that is integrated with PSE.

David. it is highly unlikely that the catalog, as built on your old machine, will transfer successfully to the new one without breaking. Organizer is flaky enough as it is; no use inviting problems. You can try it, by imaging the top-level folder of your PSE heirarchy and transferring it whole cloth to the new machine, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

Best bet is to use a standard backup program, or even better, drag and drop across a network link as described below, to recreate your images’ folder heirarchy on the new machine, then install PSE, (you can do this since so far, AFAIK, Adobe is not yet requiring activation for Elements) then simply tell Organizer to build a new catalog. It’ll take a little time to do so, but will be much better as a result than trying to force-fit the catalog from the old system onto the new.

Thank you very much for your replies, Mike and Scott,
I was already quite a ways down a parallel path when I received your replies. After quite a bit of digging in the (Adobe) PSE 4.0 forum, I found that a couple of people had had success by doing a "Backup" (within PSE), on the old machine; and then, after installing PSE on the new machine, doing a "Restore" to the new machine. After a good measure of stumbling around I was able to make this work. (While at the same time trying to make a new network work.) Anyway, bottom line, all the pictures came across fine, and all the tags and collections appear to still work fine. The file structure was moved around a bit, but that hasn’t seemed to bother the new PSE installation. If you or anyone else is interested, I’ll try to write up what I did.

Thank you again, very much, for your responses,
David

Oh, and thanks for the FAST link, Mike — I have looked at it, and need to get into that for the rest of this project

David,

Glad to help. You have been very fortunate doing a backup and restore onto different PC’s did you use third party app? The Windoze one would only allow you to backup and restore to the same PC. I’ll admit, I haven’t bothered with B&R, since W3.1 so it have may have improved with XP.

FYI, no third party… I only used the B&R within PSE!
