Hi all, after a long wait our IT folks have quoted a new Photoshop workstation for me. I had requested something along the lines of a ‘custom’ box with dual core AMD chips, based on research six months ago. Now I’m looking at the IT’s choice of an HP8400 workstation with pretty much everything I asked for – 2 dual core cpu, 3 big ass 15k SCSI disks, 4gb ram, blah blah.

Anyway, the chips are Intel Xeon 5150, 2.66Ghz, 1333mhaz FSB. I’ve read here and elseware that there were problems with Xeon and hyper threading (one reference here – <http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc13ab7)>. Anything I should be aware of with this configuration?

Thanks! TLL

What is "waddaya"? (What do you?)
My native language is not English. And I’m still learning it…

On some configurations hyper-threading makes Photoshop lagging and museing.

I discovered that the Intel Xeon 5150 2.66Ghz does not have hyper-threading and appears to be Intel’s latest and greatest. So this setup should be great. Unless someone know’s something I don’t? And yes, I ment "what do you think" – stupid slang that I will stop using…

Why not look into a 64 bit workstation? Coupled with XP64 and 6GB RAM it will fly!

Thanks for the tip! Wouldn’t this setup be what you suggested with the addition of 2 more gig of ram and WIN XP64? I have suggested this to the IT guy and was met with some hesitation. I’m a bit hesistant as well considering that I use a number of 32-bit apps (CAD and various cartographic) in support of the main Photoshop activity on this box. It’s his call not mine, but I’ll mention it again…

Photoshop is (still) a 32 bit app and, although not officially supported, it does work fine on the 64bit OS. It can address up to 4GB of RAM directly and if you have 6GB onboard, it uses any spare as a cache for the scratch disk.

You’d have to check about those other applications though.

Pipkin…

You are correct.

Waddaya (or whaddaya) = "What do you…"
Gonna = "Going to…"
Wanna = "Want to…"
Prolly = "Probably"
Mebbe = "Maybe"
I dunno = I don’t know…"
<Homer Simpson>D’oh!</Homer Simpson> = "I’m such an idiot!" 😉

There are a lot more slang spellings. If you get confused, just ask!

I can’t imagine having to learn a language as colorful and ever-changing as English. So far, you’re doing quite well.
